I know that this is about 18 hours late but...

25 years ago today the Antifaschistischer Schutzwall (Eng: Anti-Fascist Protection Wall) separating East Germany from West came down administering an ultimately fatal gut-wound to the Warsaw Pact and Soviet Union.

East Berlin and West Berlin was to be "liberalized". However, what that meant was never specified and the soldiers guarding the border were not told what to do

I will never forget what it was like to visit the border between the two Germanys. It was also a fascinating experience to travel in the East after spending some time acclimating to the West.

A very cool story in the New York Times, that hits on the some of the issues raised here: dealing with the issues of German reunification, the relative poorness of the former GDR, and how a destroyed castle in Anhalt-Zerbst may be saved potentially by Russians, because of their interest with the castle's connections to Catherine the Great.
