Sometimes when I read an informative post like this, I wish I had some thoughts to share beyond "Maybe China isn't so bad" but I don't.

Seems like we're living in a time when politics and international relations are swinging to wild extremes, I'd like to hope it's just a phase.

Do you know the concept of the Hegelian Dialectic? Thesis -> antithesis -> synthesis. We have the status quo, the rejection of the status quo and the blending of the two to form a new status quo (this is dramatically over simplified, and some would argue wrong, but I would dispute that :P ( ... )

And while I understand that power is being concentrated in fewer hands, as we know, global economics is mostly a shell game with nothing really supporting it. The ruling class and their somewhat imaginary wealth will only continue as long as they don't irritate us enough to set their mansions on fire and then hold show trials for them before sending them out on the frozen river.

I think we're learning that there really is no "other" in that women and brown people and homosexuals are all people and we have far more in common than in difference. And it is from the individual awareness that real change comes. Slavery has be a de facto truth of human culture for the vast majority of history and now it's mostly unthinkable. We may not be right around the corner from some egalitarian Star Trek global culture but unless we exterminate ourselves, it will happen. Rivers of blood may be near future though, I'll give you that. We certainly face resource scarcity as well as old ways of operating that engender conflict.

Optimistic me agrees with your second paragraph :)

Pessimistic me thinks you hit the nail on the head at the end there. We're boned.

I think it's reasonably likely we'll see a multi-billion person die off in this century, at least as likely as technology saving us to prevent that. The outcomes beyond that are definitely beyond my clairvoyance. There is something about the internet, however, that fills me full of hope. I like to deep down believe that the vast majority of us are good, compassionate, loving beings, but that it's for those who aren't to oppress everyone else. I like to hope the the global interconnectedness that's happening now is making us realise that that man isn't the enemy, THE man is the enemy.

"...Ivan Ilyin, a Soviet philosopher..."
This is either typo or factual mistake. Ilyin wasn't "Soviet" - he emigrated from Russia right after October Revolution, when Bolsheviks came to power.
"Russian", not "Soviet" would be more appropriate IMHO.
Great article.
Thank you.

Good point. I've now altered that to White-Russian, to indicate his political persuasion.

This is what happens when one remains in power for too long. They lose touch with reality and start imagining things. They start fearing their own shadow. They start seeing threats in all corners, they start fearing that "The Gays"(TM) are after them, gnawing with their teeth at the legs of their wooden throne, pushing to steal their precious sceptre or something. No surprise that Putin is now showing classic symptoms of a deluded lunatic with an excessive form of megalomania who believes themselves to be a Napoleon.

This is a killer post, thumbs-up on both hands and feet for that.
