The words "trash" and "mafia" are often heard today being used in the same sentence with "politicians", "business", and "justice" - especially in South and East Europe. The only difference in the case of Napoli is that when the people of Campania use these words, they whisper them and then look around with fright, as if they're being listened. In ( Read more... )

Seems like we've been following the Italian example so far over here in BG. Only, we're about 30 years behind schedule. But on the other hand, we're gaining fast, especially in the organized crime domain. What can I say, we're fast learners. It's not exactly the industries that are attractive here, it's the key crossroads location (the same reason Kosovo has become a hub for drugs and arms trafficking). There are vast energy projects in the making, and all of them are planned to use our territory for transit.

Yep, this stuff looks depressingly familiar, except here it's a combination of SOEs and small companies that are the biggest problems. The "mafia" are the brother-in-laws of the local police chiefs and party officials.

Where's Wall-E when you need him?

But srsly. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing this issue getting solved any time soon. The way I see it, corruption has rooted itself so deeply into the Italian society that it'd take a real disaster for people to wake up and do something tangible.

Say what you want about the American Mafiosi, but at least when they controlled the garbage business in NY they actually picked up the trash.
