The differences between the US and Al Qaeda are getting more and more smeared out, eh? Who would've thought so at the time the former was creating the latter...

Well at least they're mostly occupied with staring, while their houses don't get bombed by drones.

Our greatest symbols of power and wealth were hit by planes and we freaked.

It seems to me at this point in time that the only purpose of the drone strikes is to create more terrorists so the war on terror can be perpetuated to justify the reduction of civil liberties in the US and the expansion of the American war machine. It's almost as if after the collapse of the USSR the US thought "well damn, now there's no reason to have half of the entire world's military, let's go make some enemies!"

Why perpetuate the war, while downsizing the military?

Because the point of the war isn't to win, but to create enemies. You don't need fighter jets and nuclear bombs to do that, just some drones.

Look what just happened in Pakistan; the US kill the Taliban leader who was in peace talks with the Afghan government, and he's now been replaced with a "NO PEACE, DEATH TO AMERICA!" leader. They would have known that it was likely that would be the outcome, so now I have no place but to conclude that the US has no interest in the end of the war, they just want their boys and girls out of there so it can stop being a negative domestic political issue.

Frankly, I'm convinced, given the entire illogic of the situation, that this is exactly the intention, indeed. And you know, as long as they are going to act illogically, I don't believe I'd have a problem with them just pretending (i.e., insisting) there is a problem with random rocks in the desert that must be regularly droned to keep them in line.

Oh, but Hope&Change(TM) was promised, and Hope&Change(TM) is what they've got. Hope(TM) that they'd survive another day without being suddenly killed by a missile from the sky, and Change(TM) of warfare. Now those people up there in the mountains don't even see who's shooting at them.

And don't even get me started on the promised Trust&Transparency(TM).

We've lost the script and I'm not sure we could reel this in if we wanted to. The worldwide weapons industry seems to perpetuate itself.
