Rendering Unto Caesar: Ron Paul at the Fatima Center‏‏

Sep 16, 2013 08:40

When I was a wee lass I heard tell of a nefarious organization of rabid right wing political activism named after some sort of toilet tree. At least that is the kind of association that a child's mind makes when she hears the words john and birch mentioned by adults. The John Birchers earned a reputation similar to the Satan worshipers portrayed ( Read more... )

>> mom and apple pie freedoms: denying poor women access to reproductive health services, obtaining firearms without a license, spewing pollutants into the environment, bringing other species of life to the brink of extinction, consuming fossil fuels at a profligate rate.

Nice straw man! ;)
You forgot unhealthy food and starving people to death though.

I did not intend the list to be exhaustive.

It sounds as though you did not view the John Bircher video.

The John Birchers are a huge waste of my time (as are all Mormons in general), however I'm more intrigued and confused by the association of Ron Paul with the uber-catholic Fatima Center. Is this some kind of iso-reactionary alliance against globalization and its perceived evils? I thought Ron Paul was strictly the rationalist-atheist-materialist type and now he's getting support from crypto-catholics? WTF is going on.

Ah never mind now I see the Fatima center is a defection fasce from catholicism. LOL

The Birchers are not a Mormon organization, though it would not surprise me if they had a significant Mormon membership. Skousen was a Mormon, hence Romney's interest (and Glenn Beck's interest) in his work.

I doubt that the Fatima Center would qualify as "uber-catholic" unless that term means pre-Vatican II Catholic.

I suspect your evaluation of an alliance against globalization is on target, but it is not opposition to the kind of globalization where the US dominates.

Alex Wagner interviewed Ron Paul last week about that; Ron Paul's laugh tick is pretty annoying.

Now, it's not so much about how Ron Pauls actions reflect and affect him - but more how they reflect and affect his son. Pops can say some crazy shit, and put Jr. in a tough position come early 2016, or worse - late 2016.

To answer though, it doesn't surprise me. No, I don't think Ron Paul is an anti-Semite - he just wants somebody to listen to him - and if they'll pay to listen to him, great - and if they'll pay to listen to him but they hate jews, not great, but acceptable...

Some folks say that he came out okay from the MS-NBC interview. In some parts of the country, charges of anti-Semitism could be considered political capital.

I didn't think anti-semitism could be a positive - then again, Ron Paul/Mel Gibson 2016! might be catchy enough to get some votes...

Mel Gibson is seen as a hero in some neighborhoods.
