I have nothing political to mention - I just want to say how absolutely tragic these two stories are. Christopher Lane's story is all over the media at home (I'm Australia) but I didn't hear about the poor veteran's murder. This article makes some very interesting points though - food for thoughts. Thanks for the post.
Cliche comments aside, it's lovely to see the depth of social caring after a tragedy. I'm in no way condoning what happened but I'm glad to see that people aren't so focused on themselves that they forget the wider community. We just had a horrible double murder a few days ago and the main story is currently about how their friends are planning a tribute. It's nice to see that we can try and support those left behind without having to create controversy.
I can't believe I'm about to defend Jesse Jackson here, but I don't see anything wrong with his (latest) reaction. He's old and he got the name wrong. If he had said "Peter Cushing" or "Jimmy Olson" we'd know he was really getting old. And claiming racial motivation in the first killing is a bit of a stretch when one of the guys was white.
As far as the elected politicians in your post, they deserve more trashing.
And some of the people here, well, they aren't going to be able to pull the White Privilege card. And in the case of Delbert "Shorty" Belton, they won't be able to deflect as well as use it as an excuse to attack the NRA. Nor can they claim the thugs needed the money because the government wasn't giving them enough, or whatever. Two male teens can easily mug an 80+ year old man named shorty without hurting him, no less beating him to death.
they aren't going to be able to pull the White Privilege card.
The thing is, I'm not sure even what this means? The people who were senselessly murdered didn't deserve it in any way and the criminals are being charged with murder deservedly. So, I'm not sure how white privilege could even play into this tragedy.
It doesn't mean Trayvon was murdered either. You must have missed the trial. The prosecution straight up embarrassed itself trying to make the case for the murder charge.
I suppose the only other difference here would be these are open and shut cases. We all agree on who is in the wrong, and who the victims are. People are less inclined to share their opinions over and over and over and over if everyone already agrees with them.
We are united, for now at least, which can be mistaken for quiet and boring.
Don't worry though - at some point the discussion of punishment for these 5 will come up, and we can all jump on our righty and lefty wagons and throw shit at each other.
But don't you understand??? TWO people got killed by black people! Nevermind there are 40 murders every single day in the US, two people got killed! It proves things!
My point is that when you have three people from the African-American community so vocal about "injustice" in one case where a young African-American was shot and killed in an act of self-defense but they barely scratch the surface of two cases where young African-Americans are brutally murdering innocent people and those talking heads claim they want "justice for all", there's a clear double-standard that needs to be addressed.

And nothing is the fault of white privilege, and no problems of gender are the result of the patriarchy. Got it.
