Over a decade ago, I had a pretty fun job with a few minor drawbacks. For one, it was seasonal, with lots of work in the Spring, a Shitload in the Summer, lots in Fall, and almost nothing in Winter. I think that comparing colonialism to contemporary people on unemployment rather insults the millions slain for the profit of colonial empires.

I can see your point, but from an economic view, this comparison makes some sense. The Irish example is especially pertinent.

Some, yes, but given that in an individual manifestation colonialism could kill up to 8 million people in a short span of time, I think that metaphor detracts from the rest of it. It's a good post on the whole, mind.

During research on Vietnam I encountered a communist who remarked that the US has never known colonialism. What he failed to understand is that the US has never known anything but colonialism. To fail to see the parallels between classical colonialism and neo-colonialism is narrow minded and disrespectful of the victims.

Edit: The Irish ancestors on my father's side did the same thing when they came to America - wiped out all record of their past.

The most typical Caucasian ethnic heritage in the US is some part Irish. My own Celtic ancestors came from a different part of the pre-Roman Celtic domain.
