Whenever I hear someone use that absurd argument that: "unions were useful once, but they've outlived their purpose" (its a claim my brother makes) I can't help but get frustrated. frustrated that people who claim such nonsense don't consider things like this

Now, I am SURE some people here will defend the rights of the employer to do whatever the ( Read more... )

Just need to compare worker conditions in America to Australia to see what happens when you have weak unions.

unions were useful once, but they've outlived their purpose

I actually heard a business owner say that to his employees when there rumblings of a union organizing attempt, except he said "when I was in college, we studied union history and we all know they had a place." He proceed to make fun of the union in question, and said, all the benefits the employees had were up in the air in a contract negotiation, they could get more, but they could get less. Employees were routinely terminated without any redress, written up, typical shit.

And the irony? The business owners were screaming UWS Democratic liberal types who owned brownstones.

I'm with panookah on this one.

On the other hand we have such things as forced unionization and union-only workplace.

Pretty small potatoes. And worker rights with the last two or three decades of court decisions have been significantly reduced or rolled back.

And OP example is also small potatoes.

Thanks for outright dismissal.

Well, he was stating an opinion, you were doing more than that and suggesting a policy change based on it. That's different

And you're welcome!
