This is one factor that comes up in my own stories about how the Bizjarran Empire creates a single economy over multiple planets where all aliens are equally starfish aliens to each other. The result is a complicated and convoluted system involving paying in cash, in kind, or via fiat money depending on both the world and cultures involved, and the resulting bureaucratic nightmares from that helped produce the civil war in the backstory, the losing side falling apart very rapidly in the last stage of a long war because their solution made the problem they revolted against worse and this cost them popularity rapidly.

So in other words same idea, different source. Great minds think alike. ;P
