“Ah, Kamiyama-kun. Happy New Year!”
Kamiyama smiled back at Takemoto-san. “Happy New Year.”
“Shimpei’s still in his room,” she said, gesturing for him to come in. “Are you early?”
Kamiyama laughed. “Not exactly. The JR got delayed like it always does. Maybe he forgot I was coming.”
“Oh, I’m sure he didn’t forget. Why don’t you head on up. I’ll bring some snacks.”
As Kamiyama walked up the stairs to Takemoto’s room, he couldn’t get the way Takemoto-san had smiled at him out of his head. There was something there.
When he opened Takemoto’s bedroom door, he wasn’t too surprised to see the other boy standing at his bed, several shirt combinations in front of him, obviously trying to decide which one to wear.
Takemoto looked up at him before turning to look at the clock. “Is it 11 already?”
“Past. I’m late,” he informed him, moving to sit on the bed next to the selections. Since Takemoto had yet to choose a shirt, he was just standing there in jeans. Resisting the urge to reach out and touch, he just said, “You’re not cold?”
“A little… but I really didn’t think deciding what to wear was going to take so long.”
“Well, decide quick. You mom’s gonna be coming up with snacks soon.”
Takemoto gave him a confused look. “What? Why? She knows we’re going to eat out.”
Kamiyama shrugged. “Dunno, but that’s what she said.”
Takemoto stared at Kamiyama’s clothes before turning back to his choices again. “Ok… not this one,” he murmured, before reaching out to put the bright yellow and pink one away.
Kamiyama looked down at what he was wearing: jeans and a dark sweater, with his black coat and purple scarf in his lap. Amused, he said, “Shimpei… wear what you want.”
“I know…” was all Takemoto could manage before the door opened suddenly.
“Shimpei. I brought some snacks,” Takemoto-san announced. She swept a glance over the scene before her, as if evaluating what was going on, and Kamiyama tried not to panic at the fact that her son was still half naked, suddenly thankful that he hadn’t touched. She paused a second before moving to place the tray on Takemoto’s desk.
“Mom…” Takemoto whined, totally unaware of the implications of his state of undress. “I told you that I was going out to eat lunch soon.”
“It’s just a snack and it’s still early. It’ll tide you over until you actually eat,” she said calmly, obviously used to her son’s whining. She walked over to look at the two remaining choices.
He thought that maybe Takemoto didn’t see, but Kamiyama did not miss the once-over Takemoto-san gave him right before she reached out to pick up the white turtleneck and wide gray wrap-around scarf. “This one looks good. You should wear this.”
When Takemoto-san left, Kamiyama chewed his lip while Takemoto pulled the turtleneck over his head. Standing up, he picked up the gray scarf and helped wrap it around Takemoto’s shoulders, inspecting the way the dark gray had a slight sheen of purple to it. Hesitating a little, he murmured, “I think… she knows.”
“Knows what?”
When Kamiyama didn’t say anything immediately, Takemoto’s eyes widened. “But… how?”
“I think she’s known for a couple of months now,” he said, resting his hands on Takemoto’s shoulders. “I feel like she’s been giving me strange looks since the typhoon.”
“Oh… I guess we weren’t very subtle.”
Kamiyama smiled. “That night, I thought she just didn’t believe my story, which, granted, she didn’t, but since then… the way she looks at me sometimes…”
Head tilted slightly, Takemoto asked, “What do you mean?”
“Mm… sometimes it feels like she’s evaluating me, trying to decide if I’m good enough for you.”
Takemoto was silent for a moment before leaning up to press their lips together.
“You’re not worried?” he asked, brushing Takemoto’s cheek with the back of his hand. Kamiyama felt the warmth that spread through his chest when Takemoto leaned into his touch and let the adoration show in his eyes.
“I don’t think we need to be,” Takemoto murmured, smiling. “Looks like she’s okay with it if she’s still letting you in the house. She even dressed me to match you today.”
“You caught that, huh.”
“Well, no… not initially,” Takemoto admitted. “But anyway. Help me choose a jacket and we can go.”
