Summary: It’s the night of the last performance of TOUGH WEEDS and Kamiyama can’t concentrate. Does Takemoto really like him back?
NOTE: This comes a week or so after Why Me? I think it might help to read that first. ^_^
------------------------------
He doesn’t know how it all started. It seemed to happen so gradually and so naturally that before he realized it, he already couldn’t keep his eyes off of one Takemoto Shimpei. So when he really thought about, Kamiyama had no idea when he started liking the other boy, but as he snuck another glance across the dressing room to where Takemoto was putting the finishing touches on his hair, he realized that he really shouldn’t be so surprised.
Kamiyama quickly averted his eyes before anyone could catch him staring. He really didn’t want it to be too obvious to the other members. If what he’d been taking as signs that Takemoto might like him back were really just delusions from wishful thinking, the last thing he wanted was for it to get awkward at work.
As he fixed his earpiece in place, he thought about the night he and Takemoto went to get ice cream after the show. The way Takemoto had looked at him… The way he’d smiled at him… The way Takemoto’d held on to his hand just a little bit longer than what had been necessary… Kamiyama gulped. He really hoped that it wasn’t just hopeful thinking.
Energy was high as everyone got ready for the last TOUGH WEEDS show. It had been a lot of hard work with a lot of pressure since it had been written for them by one of their sempai, but it had also been a lot of fun too. They all smiled at each other as they go into position for NYC, but Kamiyama looked over at Takemoto just as the curtain rose, and in that moment, knew that it wasn’t just his imagination. Takemoto was smiling right at him, eyes sparkling.
The flow of the show went smoothly, but it was more a testament to muscle memory than anything else because Kamiyama was certainly having a much harder time concentrating than usual. He couldn’t seem to be able to stop his eyes from going back to wherever Takemoto was. He mentally hoped it was going unnoticed by everyone else, but as soon as the intermission hit, Kotaki was grabbing him by the arm and dragging him to the side.
“Look,” Kotaki said softly, not wanting to draw anyone else’s attention. “I know you like him and all, but you have GOT to stop staring at him.” He doesn’t have to say Takemoto’s name for Kamiyama to know that he’s been caught.
He opened his mouth to say something, but Kotaki was already gone, heading back to the dressing room, so instead, he clamped his mouth shut and put it away. He’d talk to Takemoto after the show.
All of 7WEST had decided to go eat dinner together that night to celebrate the successful completion of TOUGH WEEDS. They hadn’t been able to go out with all 6 of them in a long time, so they really weren’t all that disappointed that they wouldn’t be celebrating with the older Juniors.
As they got ready to head out, Kamiyama could feel Takemoto looking at him. Since the intermission, Kamiyama hadn’t looked at Takemoto at all. He felt a little proud considering it had taken a good chunk of his concentration to do so, but now that he no longer needed to worry about the show, lifted his head to look. Sure enough, Takemoto was looking straight at him, although he now looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Before he could change his mind, Kamiyama announced to the others that they should head out first. He and Takemoto would meet them there.
Takemoto’s eyes widened a little in surprise, but the others agreed quickly, not one of them questioning why. Kamiyama sighed inwardly, realizing that he hadn’t fooled any of them… not even the ever so dense Fujii Ryusei.
Even though he’d felt resolute when he’d announced that the other members could leave, now that it was just the two of them, an awkward silence filled the room. Kamiyama stared at the ground between them, while Takemoto couldn’t decide on where he should look.
There was something going on between them, but neither of them had ever actually said anything about it. It had started off slow, barely noticeable. They’d started mailing each other more often. Takemoto started to ask him for help on his homework more and more. Kamiyama would see if Takemoto was free if he found himself in Osaka. He couldn’t at all say when they’d crossed the line from being friends to something more, but recently, it felt like his feelings had taken on a snowball effect. There was just something about Takemoto that was different.
Taking a deep breath, he started taking a step forward. “Take-chan… I…” but that was as far as he got before falling back into silence. He was standing less than a foot from Takemoto now and just couldn’t get the words out of his mouth.
Luckily for him, Takemoto chose that moment to take pity on him, reaching out to take one of Kamiyama’s hands in his. Ice broken, they stared goofily at each other, grinning.
Lifting his free hand, Kamiyama touched Takemoto on the cheek. “I like you a lot,” he finally managed, voice gentle and full of emotion.
Takemoto’s smile brightened even more. “I’ve been waiting for you to figure that out!”
