“Oi! Mitsu!” Yokoo called out from across the practice room.
Without stopping, the oldest boy looked up. “Huh?”
“Ai! Watch out!”
The warning came a little too late, as Kitayama skated straight into Senga. Yokoo dragged a hand over his face while their leader got up a lot faster than the boy who had been mindlessly untying the laces on his skates. “Oh god. Senga, are you okay?!”
Sitting up slowly, Senga blushed, not looking him in the eye. He nodded slowly. After making sure the boy was ok, Kitayama glared at Yokoo. “Look what you caused!”
In response he just shrugged. “I was gonna warn you that Senga was there and that you should stop goofing off before you hurt someone.”
.oO@Oo.
While the two oldest members snipped at each other, Nikaido looked at Senga closely. Helping the young boy up, he leaned in and whispered. “You’re blushing.”
Senga’s eyes widened. “No I’m not.”
His best friend rolled his eyes. “Since when did you start liking Kitayama?”
.oO@Oo.
Senga did the first thing that came to mind. He hid. Of everyone in Kisumai, he felt closest to Nikaido, but his feelings for the oldest member were strange, even for him. He didn’t really know when he’d started to like Kitayama and so much of it still confused him. There were so many things that he didn’t understand, and if he wasn’t comfortable with them, how could anyone else be?
So lost in his thoughts, Senga failed to notice someone else had entered the room until that someone squatted down next to him. He jumped in surprise. “How’d you find me?”
Nikaido rolled his eyes. “Kento… Hiding under the table of the Kisumai dressing room cannot possibly be categorized as being ‘hiding’.”
The younger boy looked at his best friend, scared. “Don’t tell anyone… Please Nika?”
He considered his best friend for a second. “Can I at least ask why?”
.oO@Oo.
Kitayama jogged back towards the dressing room. ‘Can’t eat without a wallet,’ he thought, skipping to a stop. Just as he was about to reach for the doorknob he paused at the sound of his own name. ‘That’s odd… Someone’s still here?’ he thought, leaning in closer. Eavesdropping was probably unfavorable thing to do, but at the jimusho, how else were you supposed to get gossip? Listening more carefully, he was able to differentiate Senga and Nikaido’s voices.
“Kento,” he could hear Nikaido say. “Are you going to tell him that you like him?”
When Senga didn’t respond right away and Kitayama leaned even closer, his ear almost pressed flat against the door.
“No,” the young boy finally answered. “I don’t want to make things awkward.”
“*sigh* Well, if that’s what you want to do right?”
.oO@Oo.
“What took you so long~!” Fujigaya whined.
Kitayama just looked at his friend. “I really don’t know what you’re complaining about. You guys already ate without me!”
Yokoo rolled his eyes. “Of course we did. You took too long.”
“We ordered you food though,” Taisuke said bouncing happily. “You owe Wataru money.”
Kitayama just nodded before digging into his food. He didn’t want to tell them that the only reason getting his wallet had taken so long was because he had actually waited for Nikaido and Senga to leave before retrieving said wallet.
.oO@Oo.
The next morning, he came in to rehearsal exhausted. He’d had a really hard time going to sleep the previous night. Hearing that Senga had feelings for him, strangely made him happy when he thought about it, but he couldn’t explain it because until yesterday, he’d never thought of the younger boy in a romantic sense.
That aside, even now, as they were all preparing for a Shokura taping, he found himself watching the younger boy, constantly glancing across the room towards his band mate. When he didn’t see Senga looked his way, not even once, he began to wonder if he had misunderstood the situation altogether.
.oO@Oo.
As the days went on, Kitayama was convinced that he had misheard the younger boys’ conversation. Senga acted no differently towards him than usual and nothing really indicated that the younger boy had any romantic feelings toward him.
He made the decision that if Senga wasn’t going to act any different, then neither should he. Kitayama stopped watching Senga, as he joked around with Taisuke. He wasn’t looking when he and Totsu made plans to hang out the following night.
And because he wasn’t looking, he never saw the sad look on Senga’s face.
.oO@Oo.
“Kento…” Nikaido murmured, patting his best friend on the shoulder. “Maybe you should tell him how you feel…”
Senga shook his head furiously, taking a deep breath. “What good would that do?” Sighing heavily, he looked up at Nika. “He doesn’t even like men. You’ve seen how he gets when a pretty girl walks by.”
The older boy couldn’t argue that. Kitayama did have a reputation for being somewhat of a playboy. “Look. I’m just saying that maybe it’s important enough for you to talk to him about.”
With another heavy sigh, Senga shook his head and muttered, “I still don’t know how it could make anything better…”
.oO@Oo.
“Totsu~!” Kitayama sang. “Totsu, Totsu, Totsu~!”
The younger boy sighed as the other fell to the ground giggling. “Ne, Mitsu… Why’d you drink so much?”
ABC had taken longer to finish their photo shoot than planned, so Kitayama had beaten him to the restaurant. He then watched as the already tipsy boy down two more shots. Totsu looked over his shoulder. Thankfully, they had chosen a loud restaurant and were towards the back. When he turned back to face his friend, he saw that sadness had filled Kitayama’s face. “What? What’s wrong?” he said in a panicked voice.
“Ne, Totsu? Am I straight?”
Totsu just looked at him. Blinked.
Not waiting for Totsu to think of a reply, he rambled on. “I mean, I thought I was, but now I’m not sure.”
“Uh… Mitsu? You may not know this, but, um, I’m straight and definitely don’t see you that way.”
A silence fell between them before Kitayama broke out in another set of giggles. “Not you baka… Senga!”
“… Ee!”
.oO@Oo.
Now Totsu considered himself a good friend, so he really hadn’t meant for the news of Kitayama liking one of his band mates to spread further than Kawai. Really, he should have known better, considering that this was Kawai Fumito we were talking about here.
By the time the rumors reached back to Totsu, it sounded like most people thought that the group member Kitayama had a crush on was Fujigaya. ‘Oh boy…’ Totsu thought, wincing as he passed the gossiping juniors. ‘Wataru’s gonna be pissed.’
And he was, of course, right. Before the day was done, Yokoo had cornered him in the hallway.
“Totsu, Totsu, Totsu… Where shall I start?”
The younger boy backed up. He really did not like the way Yokoo was looking at him. “I don’t get it,” he said, dumbly hoping the other boy would believe him.
Yokoo looked at him, arms crossed. “You were the last one Hiro hung out with before rumors started flying. What’s the truth, ‘cause I know he doesn’t like my Taipi like that.”
.oO@Oo.
Yokoo watched Kitayama more closely. He was very certain that the older boy hadn’t heard the rumors. Actually, he was amazed that it seemed that none of the other members had heard them either. But now that it was brought to his attention, it really was obvious that the boy did fancy one of the other members. And it was definitely not Taisuke.
He frowned a bit. Senga was 6 years younger than Kitayama. The big brother in him wanted to protect Senga from the playboy in Kitayama, but as he watched the older boy… This wasn’t the same skirt chaser from before.
His gaze moved to the youngest member of the group. He blinked. “Hm… well that’s interesting,” he murmured.
.oO@Oo.
“Oi, Hiro!” Yokoo called out, jogging to catch up. “Let’s go grab food.”
Once they were settle down, food before them, the younger boy asked bluntly, “Do you like Senga?”
Kitayama nearly choked. His eyes watered as he forced the steaming hot bite of okonomiyaki down. “Excuse me?”
Not backing down at all, he just looked at him.
“Maybe?”
“Hiro…”
“What! I can’t help it okay?” he said before gulping down half of his water. “Okay look. About three weeks ago, remember that time I went back to the dressing room to get my wallet? Well, Nika and Senga were still there and I know it’s not good to eavesdrop, but I hear my name, so I thought they might be talking about me when Senga said he didn’t want to confess his feelings. I never thought of Senga that way, but hearing that kinda made me happy.
But then I tried to sorta look for it, and I didn’t see anything. I don’t know. I felt kinda disappointed.” He looked up at Yokoo for the first time since he’d started ranting. “Maybe I misunderstood.”
Yokoo thought over what he should tell his friend. “HIro… what if I told you that you didn’t misunderstand?”
“What are you talking about? Senga’s just been acting like Senga.”
Yokoo just shook his head and explained everything he’d observed in the last couple days. Kitayama just sat and listened carefully, only trying to jump in twice.
“So you think Senga likes me too,” he said dumbly.
The younger boy nodded. “And I think he’s liked you for a while no-Hey! Where are you going?”
Kitayama was putting on his jacket. “To go see Senga.”
.oO@Oo.
Unaware of anything being different, Senga sat on his bed, watching the latest episode of Shokura. He sighed as Kitayama came on screen.
He looked up at the knock on his door. When Kitayama stuck his head in, Senga fumbled around for the remote to turn off the TV.
The older boy smiled to himself, having caught a glimpse of his face on the screen. “Hey. Sorry to barge in, but your mom said I could just come up.”
Senga nodded, trying to hide his face. He was blushing and he knew it, but he didn’t want the other boy to know. So instead of facing him, he started to organize the things on his desk. “What brings you here?”
With every moment, because of the way Senga was acting, Kitayama was believing what Yokoo had been telling him earlier, more and more. Feeling confident, he walked up behind the younger boy and wrapped his arms around his waist, pulling him back into him.
Senga froze, the pens he’d been about to put away, slipping from his hand. He didn’t know what to do. As a result, when Kitayama turned him around, he saw a scared look in Senga’s eyes, causing him to panic. “What? What’s wrong?”
“I … Don’t understand what’s going on,” he whispered. “I’m so confused.”
The older boy guided him to sit on the edge of the bed. “What are you confused about?” This really was not going the way he’d thought it would.
“Well… one minute I’m sitting here, thinking that you like girls and would never l like me, and the next, you’re here! Of course I’m confused! I don’t know what’s going on!”
Before Senga could continue ranting, Kitayama placed his hand at the side of his neck, forcing the younger boy to focus on him. “Senga, do you like me?”
“Yes, but-“
He was cut off as the other boy used to same hand to pull him in for a kiss. It made Senga feel warm and he sort of melted into it, not needing Kitayama to encourage him to return the kiss.
When he finally pulled back, he looked straight in Senga’s eyes. “I know I don’t have a very good reputation when it comes to relationships, but something feels different about this. Will you still give me a chance?”
.oO@Oo.
“Woo~! Kitayama’s robbing the cradle~!”
He looked over his shoulder. “Screw you Akanishi. You do realize that Yamada’s 14, right?” He walked away, laughing at the dumbfounded look on his face as Kame slapped Jin over the head.
In the dressing room, Senga looked at his new boyfriend and said, “Everyone’s been acting so strange. They keep asking me if you’ve brainwashed me.”
Kitayama smiled. “Baka~! They’re wondering why you’re going out with an old fut like me!”
Senga just stared at him. “But I don’t get it. Hiromii~!”
.oO@Oo.
“It’s a bit weird ne,” Yokoo murmured.
Nikaido jumped. He hadn’t noticed the older boy approach him. “I guess, but they’re happy.”
He nodded. “Looks like. We’ll get used to it.” Yokoo shifted and sat next to him. “Ne Nika. It doesn’t bother you to see Senga with someone else?”
“Nah,” he said softly. “Senga’s first and foremost my best friend. As long as he’s happy.”
Before either could say anything more, Senga bounded over. “NIka… Yokoo… Hiromi won’t tell me why it’s weird for others to see us together.”
Kitayama rolled his eyes as he laughed. “I don’t understand why ‘I’m 6 years older’ is not suffice.”
“But it’s not like I’m 13 anymore!” Senga protested.
“Okay, okay, okay!” Nika said, standing and holding up his hands. “Here’s what we’re going to do.”
Yokoo stood up as well. “Nika and I are gonna go eat. You guys are going to stay here and settle this.”
The youngest and oldest gapped as their friends grabbed their coats and left.
“Hiromi…” he said, tugging on Kitayama’s sleeve. “Do you really think I’m too young for you?”
“What do you think,” he said, putting his arm around his boyfriend’s shoulders.
“I don’t care what the others are saying… I want to be with you… That’s what matters to me.”
“Good,” he said, kissing him lightly. “Because that’s how I feel too.”
As they packed their stuff up to leave, Senga said, “By the way. I heard a rumor that you liked Taipi.”
“Really? When?”
“From Goseki-kun a couple days ago.”
“Ah…” Kitayama pulled out his phone.
“What are you doing?”
“Oh nothing,” he said, leading his boyfriend out the door… Just making a note to hurt Totsu severely.”
THE END
