What a mess.

In the U.S., we have continuing pressure to pass a bill that would require mail-order businesses to collect sales tax for customers in every state. Usually, these bills include a small business exemption.

The overall problem is that politicians don't understand how much it costs to deal with that much paperwork in terms of time, money, and pulled out hair.

That speaks to the need for more representative politicians, doesn't it, Bill? ;-)

I quite agree.

And please note, this regulation is intended to apply *worldwide*, so that anyone selling into Europe from anywhere ensures that VAT is paid at the rate appropriate to the buyer's whereabouts...

It would certainly be good to have more politicians who aren't lawyers. :)

Side note: one U.S. Senator is/was a practicing obstetrician. He still had a small practice in his home state delivering as few babies as he could to be able to pay the folks working for him and his malpractice premiums until the Senate Ethics committee closed him down for collecting outside fees.

I think they had a problem understanding the word "ethics".
