Book 74: FABLES Volume 16: Super Team by Bill Willingham, Mark Buckingham & others, isbn 9781401233068, 160 pages, DC Comics / Vertigo, $14.99
The Premise: (yoinked from the back cover): Evil stalks the borders of Haven! Fed by fear and driven by darkness, Mister Dark has risen, more powerful than ever! Soon, the Fables' defenses will fall, and the day of doom will be upon them! But lo, there shall come ... The F-Men! Assembled by the great and powerful Ozma and the wise and wheelchair-bound Pinnochio (don't worry, his legs work fine -- he just wants to look the part), these fabulous Fables will combine their powers to form a team-up to end all team-ups! Every super-heroic personality will be represented: Big strong guys! Guys in cool armor! Miniature people who can bounce around inside the bad guy's ear canal. That one girl who can fly! Even a roguish, hairy anti-hero with claws: Bigby Wolf himself! Together, they will overcome their fear and defeat Mister Dark once and for all! Or maybe they'll all die horribly within seconds. What do you think this is, a super-hero comic?
My Rating: 4 stars
My Thoughts: I suppose it was only a matter of time before Bill Willingham tackled our modern-day fables, the super-heroes, within the pages of FABLES. Using existing Fables characters we've already come to know and love, he deftly satirizes comics' main genre within the confines of the larger story this collection wraps up. One of the great things about Fables is that it moves along at a good pace and doesn't remain "static" the way so many super-hero comics do. In this collection, Willingham brings an end to the Mister Dark storyline and lays the groundwork for the next set of stories, and he does it in a way that I for one didn't predict. As usual, the art by Mark Buckingham and various guest artists like the great Eric Shanower, propels the story along and keeps things visually interesting.
