Okay, it's time for me to do it: I'm having a giveaway for THE FIRFLAKE.  I'll be giving away 3 copies, one for each social platform I'm running the giveaway on. So that means one winner on Livejournal, one winner on Blogspot, and one winner on Facebook.

THE FIRFLAKE is my self-published short Christmas book, available through Amazon and even by ( Read more... )

Truthfully, I don't often enjoy specifically Christmas stories, but there are exceptions. Tolkien's wonderfully whimsical The Father Christmas Letters comes quickly to mind - and I was nearing 30 when I first encountered it.

In any event, the illustration accompanying your book's cover is what set me to writing this response. Not too cutesy, and with a really nice linework (I'm strangely reminded of Charles M. Schultz.)

But I digress. I'm entering your contest and, should I win it, my review will be posted my LJ and Dreamwidth accounts (and so also to my Facebook), to a half-dozen LJ groups and of course, to my own website, where I've reviewed authors as diverse as Samuel R. Delany and A.A. Milne.

(If it sounds as if I'm trying to interest you in me as a reviewer, period, you've guessed right. I'm sympathetic towards self-publishing philosophically and because it's something I've attempted myself in the past. Which is not to say I'm promising a good review; I calls 'em as I see 'em, since I'm trying to develop a reputation I'll ( ... )

Geoff,

You're the winner for the LJ portion of the contest. I am away for the rest of this week for work, but I will put your book in the mail when I get home next Monday. Thanks for entering, and I do look forward to your honest opinion of the book!

My favorite Christmas Story probably isn't completely qualified as a "Christmas" story; actually, I'd label it as more of a "Winter" story.

The Snowman, written by Raymond Briggs, is a storybook without words. Instead it uses music and picture to convey the messages and allow the reader/listener to create the finite details in his or her own mind.

I first read this book in Kindergarten. I remember loving the discussion with the class afterward about what actually happened to the snowman. Had he melted? Or had he left to find another boy take around.

[the following is not part of the entry. it's just an Eva brain moment]
This book also reminds me of my favorite poem regarding a snowball. I will type it for you.. but be warned: It's depressing yet hilarious.

Snowball- Shel Silverstein
I made myself a snowball, as perfect as can be
I thought I'd keep it as a pet, and let it sleep with me
I made it some pajamas, and a pillow for it's head.
And then last night it ran away
But first it wet the bed :(
