The Fellowship returns to Minas Tirith...

For Marigold's Challenge 39. Write a story based on an assigned quote from another book.

My assigned quote was:

"In the exultant crowd were still to be seen haggard faces, men with bandaged limbs and heads or hobbling on sticks and crutches. The richly coloured native costumes were most of them worn to rags. ( Read more... )

This was a wonderful use of the quote! I could imagine the scene, just as you described it, as naturally following the scene before the Gates in the book, and Pippin's thoughts were wonderfully in character.

Beautiful job!

Thank you so much for the compliment. I was afraid I had totally lost the ability to do these challenges.

I have to confess that I always wondered what many of the characters were thinking during this time.

For as much as I was looking forward to your other idea, I think this tale was absolutely perfect. Pippin's reflections were spot-on and very in-character. LOL, leave it to our Ernil to reflect more on the food spectrum, though indeed there would be less of it during a war/seige. Well done!

I would still like to do something with that other idea, but the research feel a bit overwhelming at the moment.

I just know that Pippin would be thinking about the food in some way or other. I always felt for him so much when Gandalf gave him that little bit of bread and butter and that little cup of milk and tells him that's all he gets till at least noon. Poor, underfed hobbit.

What a wonderful toast! Pippin is shown to be a perceptive, good-hearted, mature young hobbit who always has hope, and optimism for the future.

I'm glad you liked the toast. I wasn't sure what I wanted him to say and that just came out.

He really did mature a lot in a very short time. I just want to hug him and reassure him that all is well.

"I'm glad they still have their bright clothes, even if they are tattered with age and disuse."

I loved it all but this line seemed the most hobbity to me. It is so like a hobbit and so very like Pippin to wish for bright colors. this was wonderful!

The bright color thing really jumped out at me when I read the quote. I knew that hobbits loved bright colors. And I figured that with the colors of Gondor being so somber, and with Denethor's focus on all things military, the people probably had kept their bright finery packed away. They were just waiting for an excuse to bring it out again.

I always figured Pippin was fairly observant, and having spent some time in Minas Tirith, he would notice such an obvious change in the general appearance of the people.

Thanks for reading.
