GF, this was absolutely wonderful! All the letters were just seeped in the personalities of their writers: Pippin's humorous ramblings, Merry's confident and practical advice (especially on what to do with stale bread, LOL!) and Sam's warm and sensible letter with the advice on slugs (a gardener's a gardener, after all!) as well as the gifts. It would have meant so much to see his hobbits hale and happy, after all they'd been through.
I'm quite sure similar packages made their way to Aglarond and Ithilien, for Gimli and Legolas--I'd love to have seen *their* reactions as well!
The letters really helped move this fic along. Pippin was very kind to share Faramir's comment (made in confidence I'm sure!) about the ladies' reactions to Aragorn's tight. Sam just couldn't help giving some advice regarding the slug situation; there's always the off chance that he might know something the gardeners in Minas Tirith do not, especially since gardens seem to be lacking there. Merry just wanted to make sure that the bread went to some sort of use; hobbits are loathe to throwing away food.
I think Gimli would drink all the ale in one shot and Legolas would moisten the bread with a little water and spend an afternoon feeding the birds. :D
Oh my goodness, each letter is so perfectly written! Pippin's is light and teasing and sweet, Merry's is more thoughtful, and Sam's is so full of life and gardens and love. And each is just chock-full of good hobbity advice, and good cheer. What precious portraits and gifts, and the ending is perfect. And... this is a lovely 'companion' story to your other one.
This was Frodo at his very core, the one Aragorn had never met but had heard so many stories about
This was all supposed to be one fic, but the kids and the party got rather out of hand. lol :D It's better split in two, I think. Equal attention can be paid to each half of the story.
The letters were fun to write, especially Pippin's. I can just see Pippin sitting there, trying to think of more things to say and put into the letter while Merry's outside washing the dye stains from his hands.
Happy!Frodo is something we just don't see enough of. *hugs Frodo*
Very nicely done! Each letter is so characteristic, and the details bring things to life. You're right, I too can "just see" Pippin pegging away at the letter while Merry's outside, trying to get the dye off!
There are so many things I could cut and quote but then this comment would be longer than the story.
Thanks to Llinos for the recipe--we'll have to try it, next baking day.
And wasn't it very diplomatic of Merry not to mention the dye in his letter? ;) Unless he wrote his letter before the hand-dye incident. Hmm... I will have to consider this. :P
Thank you so much for reading! I'm so thrilled you enjoyed it!!
