Travelling W(h)ims(ey)ically

I’m vacationing in Edinburgh during the first two weeks of April, and I’m hoping to manage a day trip to the Galloway/Kirkcudbright area.  Has anyone reading this made the pilgrimage?  I’d greatly appreciate any insight if you have - tips, ideas, any info at all, really.  If you haven’t been there but especially love the book, or have recently re- ( Read more... )

We have friends who live in Gatehouse of Fleet. I visited there some years ago and had a great time. Try and stay in Gatehouse- central for seeing everything: it's a lovely little village.

I have lived in Perth (an hour north of Edinburgh) for 10 years and spent a weekend in Kirkcudbright once. It is a charming town but Not Very Big and it took us FOREVER to get to, as it's in the back of beyond (it is consideraly closer to Belfast in Northern Ireland, via the ferry at Stranraer, than it is to Edinburgh!). The surrounding countryside is lovely, quite wild and barren, but not dramatically mountainous. I found the towns we passed through quite run down compared to the more "urban" (which is often pretty rural in parts) areas around Edinburgh and Glasgow ( ... )
