Got my copy of Heroes back from theredoormouse! It came with a nice letter and an awesomesauce copper bookmark stamped with "SARMY," which is currently resting between the pages of Physics of the Impossible. Thank you! And it's okay that you like Mohinder/Eden more than Mylar; not everyone is perfect. ;D I would totally read anything you sent me but yes, lots ( Read more... )

I am glad you got your DVDs back okay, and I'm thrilled you enjoyed the letter and bookmark so much. I had the idea to send you a thank you gift but I didn't know what to do and literally that's why it took so long in part to mail back. *Is a dork* XD

Well, I'll tell you the first one and you can grab it and if it isn't there I'll send them. They're kinda similar (in terms of the message I got at the end of the series) to His Dark Materials, which is why I thought of you first things first.

NightWatch by Sergei Lukyanenko. (Followed by DayWatch, Twilight Watch, and Last Watch)

There are also two (really, really awful) movies, which EPIC OF ALL EPICS Lukyanenko MOCKS in the last book. Like, in the story. It's made of win and kittens.

As an aside I would love to have started you on metal stamping. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Hahaha, well, the effort is appreciated. XD And actually I was mostly using the jeweler's saw for the design; the most I have for stamping materials is my chasing hammer and nails (although I'm a bit reluctant to use those since they can deform the surface of the hammer); it seems like all the stamps are hideously expensive or have letters on them, which is fine if letters are your thing but I prefer texture stamps. =P

Oooh, then maybe a good thing you didn't send the book because I have that one! I still haven't gotten through it though, because when I was reading it last it must have been on a plane or in a car or something so I felt a little "blah." But I do have it and I must say I adore their magic system, even if I still can't work out the logic behind Russian affectionate diminutives.

Does he? Ha. I've seen the first movie and it was pretty and all, but very muddled and confusing. Sheesh. Although one of the guys totally looked like Rutger Hauer.

A) I'm more a fan of light dabbling in the field of stamping so letters are good. Sarmy was about as creative as I get in terms of it mostly because I don't know why but something about filing, metal, nails whatever but the process of filing is awful. The sound is just...Yet another thing that marks me as totally psychotic. :)

B) Russian affections are really awkward to get the hang of. It took me two years of learning Russian before it sort of clicked, but there's no more sense to it than when we take nicknames like Richard and shorten them to Hank. Which annoys me to this day.

C) The books are good and get better, you'll actually learn more about the magic system too. I know in Twilight Watch they meet a witch who is more powerful than even Gesar and Boris and Sveta and the others (in retrospect I can think of a lot of Great Wizards but I dunno how far you got and don't wanna spoil things.) and they explain a basis for that ( ... )

A.) I took a class in it my first semester; I don't remember much about what filing sounds like but yeah, your fingers do take some beating and I could imagine that it wouldn't be very enjoyable if you were sensitive to those sort of sounds (personally what grits my teeth is the feel of metal vibrating beneath my hands as I saw it, and copper dust on my fingers; still, the distinct smell is entertaining.) However, since I did that I can't make anything more involved than a strip of metal without needing to file and sand and finish it, or else it just isn't done to me. D= I don't have any sandpaper yet but I did just pick up some wood from a neighbor's lawn to use for drilling; my dad has the big equipment I need for that sort of thing.

B.) Hank is a derivative of Richard? o_O I always just sort of assumed people came, y'know, named Hank. Also you took Russian! Neat. =D I always want to learn other languages but I had to stop because a.) mom convinced me I should switch from Spanish to German since my relatives are German, b.) I had ( ... )
