Why am I doing this again? Dalia had been asking herself the question all day. Now it was finally time for her to leave work and head over to Crane House for dinner with Duela and Jonathan (and presumably Joshua, who never missed out on an opportunity to condescend to her) and she was still questioning

Crane reappeared in the room, looking around for Duela. He opened the kitchen door to announce "Joshua claims he's not hungry, but he'll be social if that's what you want. He says he's found some interesting connections in that particular volume."

"Europe's what got me into shopping," Duela said. "I keep telling Jonathan he should take my credit cards from me before I go." Not that the Cranes didn't have the money to pay off any balance right away.

"My fashion style tends to lean toward functional, more than anything else," Dalia shrugged.

"Functional can be fashionable," Duela pointed out.

"I guess," Dalia said, continuing to eat. "Anyway...what have you guys been up to?" She looked from Duela to Jonathan.

"I helped engineer a small massacre in Cardiff. It got hushed up quite quickly, but it went very smoothly." Crane's tone was completely matter-of-fact. "And I'm thinking of rigging the voting machines to spread fear-gas next election. I'm wondering if it will affect the turnout."

Dalia's mouth dropped, wondering if he was joking or not.

"That reminds me," Crane added, "Connor asked if Joshua would be available to help him in Prague next month. He's got a rather sensitive job there."

"You are not going to do anything to voting machines," Duela said, looking at her husband before smiling at her sister. He's kidding, her expression said. Whether she actually believed that was another story. She looked back at Jonathan, frowning a bit. "Well, I don't particularly like the idea of Joshua being so far away, but he's old enough now to be asked himself."

"We'll see," he replied, not indicating whether he meant Joshua or the voting machines. "But other than some minor work for others and reconfiguring my formula, I haven't done much else."

Dalia nodded, both interested and worried by the conversation. "And you, Duela?" she asked her sister.

"A few cases here and there," Duela replied. "Two civil, one criminal right now."

Dalia nodded. "Kinda glad I didn't go to law school after all."

Duela smiled at her, chuckling slightly. "I think this family's fine without another lawyer."

"I'd think so," Dalia said with a smile. She took a couple more bites of her food before finishing.

"If you're done," Crane said, "We could have our conversation before dessert."
