Dear lazyweb,

I'm looking for a digital equivalent of pins in a map.

Is there a quick, easy and free way of mapping a set of points by postcode onto a local maps using Google maps (or similar websites)?

A decent level of security/confidentiality would be a pre-requisite, as one potential use would be mapping outbreaks/incident spreads.

I have the code for this (I think) if you email me at juniper_springs@yahoo.com. I nicked it off the web, so you might be able to find it youself. Or go here: http://mapmaker.donkeymagic.co.uk, which seems to be where I nicked it from.

I'm not sure what you're asking for, but you could log into google with a google account (gmail account) and then on google maps you can create a public map.

You can then put points and lines on this map, and as it's publicly viewable you can send people the link and they can see your points and lines (they don't need a google account to view it).

Is that what you're after ?

this is an example of a map I put points on near where I work (i.e. nearest sandwhich shop/pub/etc).

That's the sort of thing I'm after, but with no public access at all.

I think you can set your Google maps individually to be "not public", but viewable to people to whom you've sent a link.
I've only started using Google Maps so can't vouch for privacy settings etc. but it might be something to look into as it covers such a lot of detail about almost the entire world!

I used it recently to create some beer-and-restaurant maps for a trip to Brussels to help friends navigate where to find me ;-)
