When Danny's knee starts acting up again, he insists it's okay. Steve isn't so sure.
"You can barely walk. Just go home, take it easy for a few days. We can make due without you."
Danny doesn't like being ordered around, and he definitely doesn't like being told that the team can make due without him.
"It's fine," he says, grabbing his keys out of Steve's hand. "I'm fine. And I'm driving."
Thirty minutes later, he's reconsidering.
"Okay, maybe not fine," he gasps, leaning back against the brick wall in the alley where three suspects are being shoved into cop cars. One has a concussion, courtesy of Kono. A fourth suspect got away, courtesy of Danny.
At the hospital, the doctor gives him a bottle of pills and tells him he's not allowed to drive, run, or jump off of two-story balconies for at least a month.
Steve brings in an HPD officer to help with the caseload while Danny is out. His name is Kai, and he's two years out of the Academy. Kono says he was the sparring champion and second best sharpshooter in their class. Her smug smile tells him who was first.
Danny hates him almost immediately.
First of all, he wears flip flops to the office. His teeth are perfect. He speaks seven languages. He brings malasadas for everyone in the office and remembers Kono's birthday.
Everyone loves him, especially Steve.
"Maybe we should bring him onto the team permanently," he muses, driving Danny home one night. "We could really use someone with his skill set. D'you see how quickly he hacked into that security system? Even Chin was impressed."
"Yeah, that was impressive," Danny says flatly.
Steve looks over at him as he pulls in front of Danny's apartment complex. "What's the problem?"
"There's no problem."
"There's a problem. I can tell."
Danny sighs. "I just...think he needs more experience."
"You hate him," Steve translates.
"Hate is a strong word."
"You hate him a lot."
"With the fire of a thousand suns."
Steve just looks at him. "Why?"
Danny turns away, embarrassed. "He's a cheeseball, okay. He made Kono a cake for her birthday. Who does that?"
"I thought that was kind of nice."
"He gave Chin a recipe for that stuff, with the chopped fish."
"Poke," says Steve. "And that was pretty good, actually. It had hot sauce--"
"He's been flirting with you the entire time."
Steve pauses mid-sentence, his fingers tightening on the steering wheel. Danny looks out the window.
"Well, thanks for the ride," he says, reaching for the door.
"Danny."
"I'll just take the bus tomorrow, no need to--"
"Danny."
Danny looks up to see that Steve is smiling at him with that stupid tender look that he gets sometimes.
"We don't need a hacker," Steve says.
"No?"
"And that poke? I've had way better."
Danny pauses. "That cake was pretty good, though."
Steve leans over and kisses him on the mouth.
"Thank god," says Danny. "I hate public transportation."
