his phone charm is actually a traditional Japanese good luck charm called a "Maneki Neko," or, more commonly, Good Luck Cat. it's a cat sitting on its haunches with one front paw extended upward as if waving or beckoning (and sometimes the other front paw will be holding money). They're usually put on the counters of japanese restaurants and stores to bring good luck. (a friend of mine bought me a few-inches-tall ceramic one for Christmas a few years ago, and i've noticed them in stores and things since. in case you wondered. :D)
