Shibasaki Kou - Kage

Mar 18, 2011 03:03

Another fundraiser request fulfilled! This time I present Kage by Shibasaki Kou, used as the theme to the drama Byakuyakou, which I haven't seen but based on the synopsis I believe these lyrics are connected to its story.

...Remember in the fundraiser intro post when I mentioned songs that contain Japanese so complicated, even native speakers have trouble figuring them out? Yeah, this is one of those. >>;; There were several strange and unfamiliar phrases in this song that none of my dictionaries or reference sites could help with, and when I tried Google, most of the sites that turned up were... the lyrics to this song. Which leads me to believe a lot of these terms don't actually exist anywhere but in Kage. >_> Most of the rest were links to Yahoo! Answers with Japanese people asking what certain parts meant, and I even found an entire blog post by a Japanese guy who found at least one word/phrase in nearly every verse that he couldn't make sense of.

This was definitely an interesting challenge. XD I like that, though - it's how I learn!

So, hopefully this translation turned out reasonably correct, and follows the story of the protagonists in Byakuyakou as I hoped it would. I'll let you folks be the judge...

This song was requested and translated as part of Taiji Project's fundraiser for disaster relief in Japan. If you're interested in sending a request along with a donation too, please check this post for details!

"Where am I now?"
I'm not particularly interested
In being in that position
Two thorns paired together
I never had anyone to trust
From the start
Surely I'll never know
Even a taste of peace

Ah, even if they lay down the weight they carry
The two companions who should love each other
Will never be as one

To carry my sadness is all I can do
With what little strength I have left
I see a vision of you
I'm not afraid to be alone
...I whispered softly

Long ago, my mother said
"There's nothing here
We have nothing
To search for"

As you picked up a seed of something unknown
So it would at least not sink to the depths
I watched you from behind...

I'll connect the dreams that were nearly broken
And safely bring today to an end
I'll surround you
And you'll be my one and only sustenance
...I whispered softly

I'll become a second sun and pray [1]
That you will find happiness
I'll let out a bit of what I feel
And all that will remain after that
Will be the traces of my breath...

[1] The actual term used here refers to a natural phenomenon known as the parhelion, or sundog, in which ice crystals in the air bend sunlight so that they appear to form a halo around the sun - and if they're aligned right, two spots of light form on opposite ends of the halo that can be almost as bright as the sun itself. (Check out the wiki, it's pretty neat!) Moreso, however, the term seems to be connected to the story of Byakuyakou - Ryoji, who takes to a life of crime to support his love, Yukiho, vows to become the sun of the dark "underground" world of crime, to shine on her up in the regular world. I hope that makes sense...
