I'm not, on either count. Is there something going on specifically? I haven't been gone long, but I feel so out of touch of what's going on over there.
Ah. It did sound a little Primaries-ish. I'm sorry about that. I was on a Christian college campus during the 2008 election, so I can assure you it goes both ways. If that helps. Which it probably doesn't. :/
It would be nice, though, if those who spat on me, kicked me and called me an abomination in His name apologized.
Go ahead and defriend me if you want to stand up for the right-wing extremists who think I'm a taint, who think I shouldn't be allowed decide what to do with my body, who think I'm a second-class citizen.
My father's an atheist. I was raised in a family here in Canada who didn't go to church. My moral balance is fine. So is my parents' and my friends' and my extended family's. My society's values are still here, though the current government is trying to erode them.
I work for the police. I watch my boys put themselves on the line every day, and I believe the system works even when God isn't directly involved.
I have never hated anyone in my life, but the fact that you think I do? That actually made me cry.
See, this kind of misunderstanding is the point of my entire post. Everyone else in the world can make a post like this and it's all 'hear hear, yeah, what you said,' but a Christian makes a post about the general attitude in this country, and everyone takes it personally. This is my journal, and it's the last place I can write how I feel, since my facebook feed is 99% people posting 'amusing' macros about how I must obviously be a horrible person just because I have faith.
I've known you for how long? I have never had a problem with your OR your lifestlye, I've never treated you like I did, and if I thought you were the hating kind of person I would have cut you eons ago.
I am simply tired of getting attacked, called unintelligent, and having people assume that I hate ANYONE just because I believe in God. I have never spat on, kicked or called anyone names in my entire life, because that is not what the Bible teaches.I am very sorry that happened to you, but those people weren't good Christians. They were just horrible people
( ... )
But you can be a good person without being a Christian too, and your statements above preclude that.
There are blanket statements in your post: "You [...] direct hate against me[...]" No, most of us don't.
"You [...] readily vilify me because I am His." No, most of us don't.
"You [...] silence anyone who disagrees with you." No, most of us don't.
I don't think the people who abused me were bad Christians. They were bad people, hypocritical people, who used a religion to further their goals.
And while there are two sides to every coin, I feel like I need to point out that Christians are NOT an oppressed minority, and haven't been for centuries. There is no "reverse racism" here. When I watch American politics on TV (less and less), I hear the word "God" on everyone's lips, and it's very obviously a Christian God. If God was removed from the country's justice system and schools, He is at the very least being injected right back in there.
Yes, there are blanket statements. It addresses a general tone, hence the 'Dear America' at the start. I could say 'most of us don't' to everything you told me in your first comment, but what good would that do? My entire POINT is that this country is taking the word of the few as the opinion of many. Again, this is happening on BOTH SIDES. All I'm asking is for people to recognize that.
"You preach tolerance of others, but readily vilify me because I am His. (He taught only acceptance.)"
I think this is the point that gets lost by all sides. Also 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'--if everyone applied that standard, society would work regardless of any individual's religious beliefs.
I believe there is a higher power that gives purpose to our lives. I have a problem with any one religion declaring itself to be the only one.
Jesus looked at actions, not beliefs, when he said 'whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.'
There is no Truth, no Law, no Justice, and no Accountability in a society run on the personal self-centered wills of individuals. Wake up.
This. My political views have been all over the place in recent years as I try to make sense of my beliefs and how they fit into the messed up political climate we have right now. The stark polarization of everything has made faith and politics almost unbearable (though still so necessary). We'd all be much better off if we actually tried to work together, despite differences, and made an honest attempt at compromise.

Thank you. Extremists are just so much louder than the rest of us, you know? *pokes them with a stick*
