He couldn't win. If he tried a room without windows, he got twitchy because he couldn't see out. With windows, he always worried about who was looking in, or might come through it.

He was so tired of this, and hadn't any idea of how to banish the ghosts at the edges of his memory, of his sight.

I recognize that issue. Incredibly sturdy shutters might help. It then becomes a changeable state.
