la Grammont was angry, early on, her body tremoring just barely enough to be noticed, but something snapped when Kaschei's horse turned away from them, the patterning on its flank giving way to exposed steel, etched in like broken bones. She made a noise like an outraged steam kettle, froze for less than a second, then placidly followed the other horse like the nag she was painted to look like, her fire fluttering just a little in the upper registers.

"Wha--" Ilya began, and she cut him off with a burst of static.

Sinclair didn't say anything, but noted silently that the exposed section was near the other horse's fire, and if the marks meant what he thought they might, that meant Grammont was faster, despite the other's smaller size and lighter load.

I just *love* the wordage in WH, the way the mental images switch from flesh and blood horses to ships and back again.
