The really odd thing, the one he could never quite wrap his head around, was that even in terems, the shchi made with fresh vegetables, with sorrel and spinach leaves unfrozen, was still called rakhmanovskie shchi. Harder to get, but 'lazy', 'simple', 'indolent', in comparison to the much more common heavy winter shchi soured with pickled cabbage.

He still ordered it whenever it showed up on doors' displays. Paid the price--often comparable to the standard shchi despite the expense of the ingredients--and ate it with the omnipresent sour cream and chopped eggs. Food was food, after all.
