Title: Promise
’Verse/characters: Wild Roses, Phoebe (leRoux) Sabaey, (Ian Tattersall Sabaey)
Prompt: 082 "If"
Word Count: 199
Rating: PG
Notes: . . Oi. Where to start. Phoebe was a contemporary of Ian's, and the woman he fell in love with, after he was already married (she later married Aifiric and became the first Sabaey-Queen). Ian, it was mentioned (in Hero), died. What most people aren't aware of is that the Second Ian (one of the princesses' sons--in this case, Hilaire's only child) managed to hit Ian!brain so completely at age ten-ish that he effectively became a reincarnation of Ian himself. Who looked around, thought mildly that well, the vow was 'til death do us part' . . .

Ian does not make promises he does not keep. He will rarely make promises that later he finds he cannot keep, and they weigh on him. Every one.

It's a self-made law I must admit to admiring, even though I've seen what it can do, wrongly applied. Witness his marriage vows, and the woman they bound him to. If he had not been himself, he and I would have been lovers long before his son became King. I would never have been Queen, and my children would be something else entirely. But he was, and for all his eyes spoke, he never said a word to me of longing, or of wishes unspoken.

I have never asked him to promise to come back to me, once he showed up on my doorstep and said, soft, that death negates a marriage vow.

I have, in fact, never asked him to promise anything to me, and I never will. Because he would give me any promise I asked of him, marriage, loyalty or a pattern-weaver’s arms, and he would keep that promise.

Even if it meant he came back to me as no more than a voice within someone else's smile.
