Reason to like LJ

One of the reasons I like LJ so much is that it's open. When most of fandom interaction was on mailing lists, you could participate only if you joined the list and it was difficult to know which lists to join, where you'd like the discussion and the fics and where you wouldn't ( Read more... )

Yes, many people close their journals and communities, but not all.

I agree that LJ makes fandom life easier, but as for interesting discussions, my experience is that they are all friend-locked. I myself only post quizzes and fic announcements publicly. The problem with LJ, unless you block non-friends from posting is that anybody can intrude in your conversation. Maybe I'm not a very social person but when I discuss important things I don't like strangers to read. On this issue LJ is definitely better than ML. You can talk to many people you trust and keep the rest out of the conversation.

Not all people flock interesting discussions - many only do it for personal things. But yes, LJ lets you pick and choose.

Oh, me too. And of course, on LJ you're not locked into pre-made communities--you make your own, shaping them to your own interests as you go along.

I think the openness of LJ as a resource helps the discussions to go on and develop.

It certainly does.
