    Not Intergalactic Baby Sitting

The Chimera scientist pushed open the door of the Resolute’s guest room.  Their stopover on Earth had been brief.  Tetrax had picked up a package from a loyal customer and they were to fly it behind the moon for twenty-four hours before returning it.  If it was the same package the two had picked up last month, things would prove interesting.  As soon as her sanguine orbs had taken in the scene in the room, Myaxx knew exactly what the bounty hunter was doing.

“Shard, so now you are a glorified babysitter?  I didn’t know you had it in you,” Myaxx asked playfully and her crimson eyes turned downwards towards a tiny human child in pink pony pajamas who was brushing a doll’s hair carefully.

The Petro Sapien looked as though he stiffened, if he could, at the compliment before returning to unpacking an assortment of pink, glittery things.  The Chimera scientist found it very amusing.

“I am not a babysitter.  My client asked me to safeguard this package for him.  It is a very high risk job,” Tetrax said, chest seemingly puffed out.

“He asked you to take care of his daughter.  There is hardly any risk at all,” Myaxx commented, a hand on her hip.

“Yes, there is, she’s a very volatile being.  You never know when she might spontaneously combust,”

Myaxx raised the muscle above her eye that could be considered a brow.

“Humans, even unique ones, have a very low likelihood of spontaneously combusting.  Besides, she’s an energy manipulator.  I’m sure she could channel her energy elsewhere,”

The little girl looked up from her doll with wide, blue eyes.

“Would you like me to?” she asked, batting long eyelashes.

Myaxx cocked her head to the side and peered down at their guest.  The child tapped a pair of pink Mary Jane shoes together.  The Chimera took a deep breath, looking as though she was bracing herself for something severely unpleasant.

“No, Celeste.  That won’t be necessary for today.  I don’t think my lab is prepared for such a thing.  Thank You, though, just the same,” she said sweetly, something that Tetrax could never get used to.  Myaxx and sweetness just didn’t seem to go together.

The little girl nodded before reaching into her pocket and pulling out a vid pad.  She flipped it open.  Celeste pulled a stylus from behind her ear and worked her way through a series of menus before she looked up at her two caregivers.

“Will you too watch a projected vid with me?”

Tetrax nodded.  It was in his contract that he should appease the young human when physically possible.  Projected vid files were certainly included in that.  Projected videos meant sitting quietly and watching animated sims aptly for hours and not playing with pink and green haired dolls and/or making tea for them and consuming it over conversation about kittens and of all things, wizardry.  Apparently, her father was reading her the Harry Potter series of Earth books and Celeste had currently decided it would be fun to ride something called a ‘basilisk.” Myaxx had wanted to study such a thing, but Celeste had assured her that the creature had been killed at the end of the second book and thus, could not be studied.

Tetrax was not interested in getting into another drawn out debate about how whether or not it was possible to genetically formulate an animal who had never existed in the rented spare room of his ship.  He was quite content  to sit and watch vids with the human child.  It was quite possibly the easiest way to avoid Myaxx’s impassioned arguments and get paid at the same time...and it was good pay.  That was part of the reason why he kept taking contracts from the Morningstar Estate.  The pay was fantastic for the amount of labor involved and he needed it...especially with certain...tenants making their home on his ship...and he wasn’t talking about Gluto.

“Of course, I’d love to watch one of your Projected Vids.  We can even use the Resolute’s main view screen,” Tetrax chimed in, doing his awkward best to mimic Myaxx’s previous chirpy tone as he sat down behind Celeste.

The Chimera looked at the bounty hunter with bemused crimson eyes.

It was worth renting out a room on the Resolute for her experiments just to hear things like that.

“I think I will too,” Myaxx said, lowering her towering frame to the deck and leaning in towards Tetrax.

Celeste innocently looked up at them and beamed.

“Good!  I brought my favorite vid of all, just for you two!” Celeste said, clapping her tiny hands.

At her action, the lights went out and her vid pad began to project a large sim of a picturesque fairy tale landscape.  A narrator introduced characters and gave a plot setting.  It was a recognizable Earth fairy tale.  A beautiful maiden was somehow thrust into the arms of a hideous beast who promptly asked her to marry him every day after supper.  It went on and became repetitive to the Petro Sapien, but the Chimera found it gave her a perfect opportunity.

“Enjoying the movie?” Myaxx trilled, leaning over the surprised bounty hunter and letting her facial tentacles brush against crystal skin.  Her dark lips pulled into a semblance of a smile when she felt Tetrax fidget at the contact.

“Easiest two thousand galactic credits I’ve made all month,” he responded.

“No wonder you are always so eager to work out contracts with them.   One overly protective father means you get the pay for a week in a day,” the Chimera hissed, knowingly.

“The man has standards, not unlike myself,”Tetrax whispered, somewhat haughtily.

“He’s also got a particularly adventurous mate.  Do you have one of those?” Myaxx purred into where his hearing receptors were, purposely rubbing a few of her tentacles on the spot.

The bounty hunter almost stuttered at that and it made Myaxx grin in the darkened room.

“St-op that.  There’s a small child present,” he huffed before turning his attention back to the Vid.

Myaxx purred in her throat and eased back as she looked back at the screen to find that the movie didn’t end the way she had expected it to at all.  At the end, despite the princess’ love, the beast did not turn into a handsome prince, but remained a monster.  This apparently did not bother the princess, as they both did end up living happily ever after at the end of the vid.

When the movie was over the projection flickered out and the lights came back on.  Celeste beamed.

Myaxx raised a hand questioningly.

“Celeste...I’ve heard this Earth story before...and it did not quite end that way, if I recall,”

The little girl smiled.

“You are right, Myaxx.  It usually does end differently.  Grandma gave me this one and I like this ending best because he doesn’t turn into a handsome prince.  He stays just as he is...and the princess stays the way she is and everyone is happy.  That’s what true love is.  You love someone for who they are, not what you can make them,” Celeste nodded knowingly as she hugged the doll in her arms.

Tetrax whistled awkwardly.

“Well, that is enough of that, little one, time for bed by Earth’s clock,” the bounty hunter said, picking up the little girl gingerly and carefully placing her in the bed.  Celeste snuggled into a ball under the pink comforter that matched her pajamas.  She hugged her doll close to her and waved at Tetrax and Myaxx.

“Sleep tight, little hatchling,” Myaxx chirped again in her false, high voice.

“Goodnight, Celeste,” Tetrax said, not even trying to raise his voice to that high of a register again.

“Good Night, Myaxx and Tetraxx.  See you in the space morning,” Celeste responded, turning over in the bed and snuggling in.
The two aliens left the human and closed the door behind them.  They hadn’t taken three steps before Myaxx broke the silence between them.

“Don’t worry.  I won’t try to change you,” Myaxx quipped, nudging him as he went passed.

Tetrax’s eyes went wide and he stopped in his tracks.

“What...What did you mean by that this time?” he asked, almost nervously.

“I like you just the way you are,” Myaxx’s ruby red eyes twinkled.

She winked and blew a kiss at the bounty hunter before returning to her rented room and sliding the door closed before Shard could respond to her.

“Life lessons from children’s media.  Who Knew?” Myaxx chuckled to herself.

She smiled as she heard a heavy knock on the door of her quarters.
