Eighteenth Truth [Accidental? Video]

[A camera turns on, near the edge of the woods. All that can be seen from this angle are a blanket of snow, and the dark tree trunks rising up from it ( Read more... )

[He's taken to taking walks more often, bored out of his mind and looking for something to keep his thoughts away from the failed attempt at growing closer to Castiel. They haven't spoken in a week.

...and Dean promptly stops short at the sight of someone that looks way too damn familiar. Oh, no. Fuck no. Hell no.]

H-Hey.

[His voice is hoarse from the cold, and he clears it before speaking again, louder, tightening his jacket around himself. It's friggin' cold out here.]

Hey! Medicine Man! The Hell are you doing?

Somewhere under there you've gotta have some sense of self-preservation. [Right? Right?] You can't go in there half-cocked, 'cause if you get ganked then I'll be the only one left here savin' people, and there's too many idiots to look after.

[Translation: You are my only hunting bro.]

...Concern?

[He really, really doesn't expect that from anyone. Ever. Except Kayo, but she's... Kayo. She doesn't really treat him the way humans usually do.]

[Perhaps it's just that he's been here so long.]

[He rolls his eyes, but isn't disagreeing with the guy. Dean doesn't like to have emotions pointed out. It makes him vulnerable.]

...yeah. Concern.

[A long pause.]

I won't die.

[Very matter-of-fact. He's done it twice, once because of an event and once because he was too young to control his power. It won't happen while he's clear-headed; never has before.]

[No matter how skilled the Medicine Seller is, Dean finds it hard to believe when an Angel of the Lord couldn't do jack against the Operator. Point of fact, he should probably mention that.]

...listen, man - You got anything like angels where you're from? Celestial beings?

...Kami?

[That sounds vaguely familiar. Let's go with that. Dean is pretty sure Bobby mentioned kami when ranting about Japanese monsters, so that would make sense. The man was fluent in the language - too bad he's not here to make the Medicine Seller see reason.]

Yeah. Well...look, dude - I know one. An angel. He's here, at the Mansion. And he was there when the thing attacked me, so he might have seen more than I did.

[Castiel never told him what had happened on his end - only that he'd been thoroughly pissed to be playing pick-up sticks with all of Dean's body parts.]

[If the Medicine Seller were less determinedly stoic, he might express some frustration. Not that it isn't good of Dean to be concerned for him, it's just... He has a purpose, and that purposes is fighting mononoke, and there's no talking him out of it. He's backed down from that purpose ONCE, and that was at the request of the woman being haunted.]

[His own safety is so utterly immaterial that he finds this whole discussion ridiculous.]

...If I were to die... what about it?

[It's trivial. Annoying, at worst. And unlikely to begin with--even if he's outclassed, he's a clever sonofabitch, and very good at defending when he's got to.]

[Medicine Man seems to be able to get right to the point, doesn't he? Dean's frown deepens, and he shifts uncomfortably in place. A sense of self-preservation is important for a hunter where he's from, because there are so few of them. Were he to die, the death toll would be even higher. Innocent people would lose their lives. Dean can't quite wrap his head around the concept that someone wouldn't even have the decency to save themselves.]

If you die, you won't be able to save anyone. [Dean knows he's fighting a losing battle, now, but wants to get his two cents out there.] Look, I know it's different where you come from, but...

[He remembers the Hellhounds.]

...you helped me, once. So don't go disappearing without letting me return the favor someday, yeah?

Pretend like he's grown up in this icon. Bah, I need more space... tadanokusuriuri February 28 2011, 20:22:27 UTC
[A practical concern, not being able to continue his duty. He's not sure he'd label that duty as "saving people", but it's certainly a welcome side effect... Dean seems to be under the misapprehension that he's like a human, though, something that can be easily killed and taken out of the way.]

[That's not a talk he's ever had, or one he's about to have.]

...I haven't died... often enough to... "disappear".

[It's against 99% of Dean's rules to let someone go off and willingly offer themselves up to a cosmic beastie like a sacrificial lamb, but if the Medicine Seller wants to get himself killed, then Dean's not gonna stand in his way.

Unless the situation is really dire and it's the guy's last life or something.]

...guess I'll, uh...see you around, then.

[The Medicine Seller pauses for a few moments, then turns his back on Dean.]

...Hm.
