Yes, I can understand that, and I do -got used to it-, but I still think iconmaking means more than just being good at bettering the quality of the images.
I'm a pretty new iconmaker...am I guilty making mostly bases? ^^;
I used to like putting text in my older icons...but sometimes adding in text can really destroy icon (especially if you don't have a suitable font), now I realise that some icons look better without text.
Personally, I think adding appropriate colour layers is a skill that not everyone can manage X) So it's not that bad if the icon looks simple. But as you two mentioned above, it boils down to mainly personal preferences ^_^
Completely random, but cynicalsnark & yutsuki are 2 of my favourite iconmakers too :D
