The balance of nature. This is a thing that people talk about, and every time they do, I cringe.

Wikipedia has an entry on the balance of nature, which has this (among other things) to say on the subject:

The theory that nature is permanently in balance has been largely discredited, as it has been found that chaotic changes in population levels

The sexual habits of the fig wasp are pretty out there. The mother lays her eggs in a fig, and goes off and dies. The males hatch first, have a look around, and decide the first thing they need to do is have sex with their unborn sisters. Having completed their part, they die too. The sisters are born pregnant, and so stretch their wings and the wonderful cycle of nature continues.
