This link goes to a very short (only a few paragraphs long) story written by kennric as part of a project he's doing to write 52 original short stories in 52 weeks, one story per week for a year.

This story is number 17 in the project, and it's called Legacy. It's a meditation on transhumanism and uploading and what it means to be a copy, and it's ( Read more... )

It made me cry, too. A really lovely piece of fiction.

That was lovely. I particularly liked the acknowledgment that the flower had to be imperfect to be perfect, if that makes sense. Great imagery all around.

If anyone is interested in a longer SF work where this idea is . . .well, not explored thoroughly but definitely something that comes to mind, try Scalzi's Old Man's War.

Beautiful story- touching, tragic, and hopeful all at the same time. I printed a few copies and gave them out at our cryonics meetup last night. I also advised that it not be read during the meeting for obvious reasons.

I don't know if this was the author's intention, but the real tragedy I see in this story stems from Drew's bigotry and close-mindedness. He and his wife both suffer through years of loss and separation because of his refusal to recognize that the upload is his wife. It seems curious to me that even she seemed to fall into the same (IMHO) fallacy.

Either way, great story and very thought-provoking.
