Synesthesia

OK im not sure how many people will actually like this kind of post but I'll give it a shot anyway ;)
I guess some of you already know, some of you don't - I am "suffering" from a phenomenon called synesthesia. It's not really a disease rather than just some mental condition, the most basic description published on Wikipedia is a good way to give ( Read more... )

I've always been fascinated by synesthesia, I'd love to chat with you about it, and how it's affected you, at Confuzzled :]

Reading your post reminds me of a few things. One is Aphex Twin. I have driven many ppl mad by playing it lots and loudly.
I just love his things. Also artists who make similar music. I have never linked it to something but this all makes sense. I don't have much of the visual thing going on but ocaasionally I try to visualise music as well. Or maybe I do more often but just subcontiously. Beat and sound related..

Another video that pops into my head reaing this is Cassius - The sound of Violence
and Prince - Sign O the times

Both i have found the visuals working so well together witht he song.

The other one is who? Tom Jenkinson I guess? =) AFX and him used to have a period when they were competing in the IDM style leadership (althought Jenkinson's approach leaned more towards his own manifest and "drill'n'bass" - it was around the time when AFX released Drukqs followed by Jenkinson's "Do you know squrepusher" release).. later on everyone went his own way again.
But yea, this is just a tip of the iceberg, the "commercial" sphere. But all in all, it would be cool to create some progessive electronica event ;) Althought.. to be honest it might happen it will be even less popular than the metal furdance slot at RBW with 0 people at the dancefloor =) *sniggers*

And oh yea, Cassius had a wonderful vids. But they held only a superficial connection to the music imho. Personally i loved his 1999 tho =)

Squarepusher is certainly one of them. But I know there are others as well who's name I can't think of at the moment.
How about an IDM roomparty at CF ? :P

Wow, I think I suffer from this as well. I'm always switching between radio stations on a constant to try and visualize the road ahead of me with the beat. Its almost like guitar hero only Im in a car. I guess I'll explain how I do it, I try to match the speed with a beat, every object is the objective to get it to hit the edges at the exact moment that it hits. Helps me relax, though techno has gotten me into some trouble because of the fast paced tempo to it and my lead foot.

I'd also love to talk to you about this sometime, I thought I was the only one that did this "visualize" but I guess not.

As you probably know already, I'm a fan of IDM too and people who do clever stuff with their music videos. I've got all of Chris Cunningham's stuff on DVD as well as Gantz Graf. I have to admit, I find Gantz Graf and more of Autechre's recent stuff not so easy to listen to, but when put to video it does seem to make a lot more sense.

I wasn't actually familliar with the plyPhon video until you posted it here, but it did remind me a lot of the Chemical Brothers Star Guitar video by Michel Gondry due to the way the music seems to represent a journey (admittedly in a much more abstract form in the Autechre one). Not sure if you're familliar with the video but I certainly recommend it if you're not :)

Of course, that video is a classic! =) Just by the way it reminds me - have you heared the Brookes Brothers DNB remix of Star Guitar? It's so sweet! =)

And if your talking about the work of Ch.Cunningham DVD, I totally have that one too! It's a must! :D And yea, I have to admit Autechre is not exactly an easy listening side of IDM but once you find your way to it.. when I first discovered Ganz Graf's video, it totally gave me goosebumps... it still does every time =) It fits in every aspect!

I was always interested in synesthesia. I often imagine lights, shapes and colors when I hear music myself. I don't see them nor feel them; I just imagine them.

OH and the best part about it? Girls dig it!
