Privilege and horror

So, various and sundry bits of the fandoms that I lurk and rarely actively participate in have been going through a bunch of racial upheavals. And I've been watching it like a train wreck, sort of staring and going "huh." Discussed quite a few of these events with the Pack over Sunday dinner, and there was a lot of "Wow, can you imagine SAYING that ( Read more... )

You're never without a horrible story for every occasion, it's true! *hugs*

It does bother me a little that so many of my friends and aquaintences have advised me to brush this off because it's fine and doesn't matter. I think my dad put it best though. It matters to ME, so it's not fine, whether or not a person of color would be hurt by it.

I need something to re-jumpstart my writing anyway, maybe wrestling half a book into submission through Sterk's viewpoint will help. I'm seriously going to post this monster f-locked someday so you can actually read it.

Eh. It's not so much suggesting you brush it off. Dad's right. If it's important to you, then it's important. I'm just saying that you shouldn't beat yourself up over it. Don't rush to judge your work too harshly, nor condemn your subconscious for not being socially aware.

*hugs*

Gotta agree that it's a worth goal, and perhaps your duty if you want to be an artist of integrity, to examine what your work contributes to. There's being overly PC, there's White Liberal Guilt, and then there's considering that when a white person tells a person of color "I don't think this oppresses you" and the PoC says "I think it does", the PoC might have more insight ( ... )

=(

I wouldn't consider anything racist about it since the backbone of the story is about a mixed race trying to regain their power, but then again, I'm not you or a minority who could possibly feel insulted. However, I guess I can see how it could be considered a little hypocritical..

What I think I would feel is disappointment for the Dernards not being around for much of the story because from what you've said they sound as if they'd be a far more interesting subject. They are more oppressed and it would just be more..uh.. epic? But then again, I haven't read the book yet and may have had misunderstandings. But I'm always a fool for those rags to riches stories. The worse they start off, the better. ><;
