I had a Great Blue Heron in my yard. It is very bizarre since I don't live by the rivers or a lake or any other body of water that would attract a heron.
I agree. It kind of freaked me out. It was my dad's favorite bird... that and the symbolism for phoenix that the blue heron has in Egyptian mythos... yeah.... visitation... of some kind.
Awesome! It was probably en route to a wet location and thought it'd stop and say hi.
I used to love watching them in the creek behind the place I used to work. There was a pair of them. They crack me up flying with those big feet trailing behind, they look so unlikely. Wonderful animals.
They actually are a very secretive bird in most circumstances and people don't see them too much. It is what makes it very strange that it was in my yard.

I love the calls the most. They sound like velociraptors or pteradactyls
