So, I have this really awful problem where I don't know how to sew but keep falling in love with your projects anyhow. I buy t shirts with the intention of reconstructing them, and then don't. I'm a kinesthetic learner - which means you learn by doing - but I'm pretty much a wussy and I'm afraid that I'll mess up and so I put it off over and over ( Read more... )

Aah I have the same issue. I learn by doing but I'm scared to do & mess up. D:

Those projects are absolutely adorable, though~ <3 the pirate pillow

I buy these t shirts that I love, get them and get excited - but then worry that I'll accidentally destroy the shirt! It sucks, right?

Thanks! The pillows are super, super easy - but making them hurts my fingers!

Yaa. XD I have a pile of shirts that would be really good for refashioning, but. ONE OF THESE DAYS I will get to it, and not worry about destroying them all.

How did you make the pillows, if I can ask? O:

Of course! They're no sew, which is the best part.

You take a t-shirt, and pin the front and back together in a square around the design. I then cut out the square - about two inches larger than I wanted the pillow to be - and cut one to two inch strips all the way along each side. Tie the strips together, stuff it and you've got a pillow!

yay pirate pillow!!!

ah don't worry, just do it! [use a crappy tshirt that you won't be bummed about ruining] and there you have it, easy peasy!

I did that - I was taking stuff to Goodwill and on a whim grabbed a couple of shirts to keep and play with. I was going to get rid of them anyway, so why not practice on them? That way you're not spending money on something you might "ruin". And hey, one of them turned out pretty decent so I may have even saved it! LOL

Yeah, I agree - start off with shirts that are old and you don't want amymore, or are too small/ big or that you can get really cheaply somewhere and start off with something simple. You will make mistakes along the way but I find that even if you make a mistake with a shirt, you can usually reconstruct it again into something else (even it's just by cutting off the design and adding it into another shirt).

Although its annoying it mess up tshirts and feels like you have wasted money, it is still worthwhile because you will (hopefully) have learned something from the experience.

Thank you! Eventually I'm just going to have to man up and do it... lmao. And thank you for the tutorial suggestions - I too am sewing term illiterate. LMAO.

You're very talented.
What kind of sewing machine do you use, if you use one?

Thank you, but I can't really take any credit for talent here! When I do use a sewing machine, it's just my Mom's ancient one. The pillows are actually no sew, though!

I totally relate to your first paragraph, I'm afraid to mess things up and then have it unusable. I'm pretty cheap, so even losing $5 aggravates me. I love what you did, though!

Thank you! I tend to buy expensive(ish) shirts, like band shirts and threadless shirts, and I can't bear the thought of losing them! I am determined to learn this someday, though.
