There are always long lines for the women's rooms at the librarian conferences that I go to. :-)

...recognizing names of scientists I’ve cited in my work (“Swanton et. al., 2011” there he is!)...

When I was working on my senior paper for my philosophy degree, my adviser suggested that I contact some of the people whose work I was citing. I was terrified by the idea. These were actual philosophers, and I was just a student! Contacting them was unthinkable -- it would have felt like standing up in a theater and running on stage with the actors during a play.

I don't feel that way any more. I'm not sure what changed, but now when I look at scholars' names in papers, I don't think "them", I think "us". And I try to get my students to understand this, too -- the scholarly community includes everyone! Yes, even you, you adorable little undergraduates!
