What if Sam died in that car accident in 1x01? And the whole real life vs. 1973 debate was his way of trying to figure out whether he'll be going to hell or to heaven in his afterlife?

I've heard of a similar idea, over at the comm. At Jumping_off there was a long discussion of how it might be that the whole series was Sam's attempt to come to terms with his life before dying, and that his 'waking up' in 2006 was simply a continuation of that, and the jump was his final acceptance of his death
