I noticed a while back that right around the corner from me is a polish deli. They sell locally made pierogies there. and homeade borscht. The last perogies I got were the sweet kind, and they were tasty, but not the real deal. Not the stuff my family used to make back in the olden days. Today I checked in and they had potato and cheese pierogies. I ( Read more... )

pdx used to have a place w/good potato and cheese pierogies, but i don't know where it was--lauthner brought me one when i first worked at plc. that was the only really good pierogie i ever had.

this, i would think, is as good a motivator as any to want to be in nyc--the plethora of interesting foodstuffs.

Weird. Dad would be proud.

I've found a few recipes for pierogies online that look pretty close, but try finding dry cottage cheese anywhere. I'm just not sure about straining regular cottage cheese. And I've found some places online that actually sell "authentic, homemade" pierogies (haven't actually tried that yet), but there's just nothing around here. I've also looked around a little bit in the Woodstock district in Portland, just cuz there does seem to be a pretty good slavic presence there, but haven't found anything. Maybe Woodburn... I know there used to be a huge Russian population there...

You might try 'farmer's cheese' or 'dry curd cheese' for searches. Sunshine Dairy Foods produces dry cottage cheese, these places all carry that line, unfortunately they're in Eugene. There are a number of places that carry that dairy line in Portland too though. (Now I'm hungry...again...dammit!)

Red Barn Grocery
Wild Oats Markets
The Kiva

I've tried the farmers cheese. It's all that's available pretty much. I need to go into the polish neighborhood of Greenpoint though. I just wanna know what the hell happened to dry curd cottage cheese?! We used to get it in the biggest hick metropolis ever: Ontario, Oregon. And you can't find that shit in New York? WTF?????
