The ride to the hospital was a complete blur to Quatre. He could vaguely remember the ambulance arriving, the paramedics ripping him away from Trowa's motionless, cold body. It took next to no time to get the two loaded into the back of the ambulance...and only a few minutes to get to the hospital. They had rushed Trowa into surgery immediately, leaving Quatre alone in the hall. He had stood there for what seemed like hours until a nurse had guided him to a chair. It was in this chair that Heero found him.

He looked up at Heero's voice, surprised to see the former Gundam pilot before him. "Heero...he...he's in surgery...I don't know...if..." Quatre couldn't bring himself to finish the sentence, it was too hard. He fell into silence for a moment, but he knew that Heero had asked a question..and he struggled for the answer. Slowly, very slowly he began to recount what had happened, leaving out, of course, that he and Trowa had made love.

Heero's eyes grew wide with surprise, shock and anger as he listened to Quatre's recounting of what had happened, knowing what he'd left out but not worrying about that. What happened between the two pilots was between them, not anyone else, despite what Duo might think ( ... )

Quatre hardly noticed Duo and WuFei arrive, only truly coming to when they started talking to him. Their words made little sense to the blond pilot. Words of concern and sympathy. 'What do they know? These words don't make any difference. Trowa's in there fighting for his life...because of me. They were aiming for me....' His mind reeled. He couldn't focus. Quatre had omitted the fact that the gun had not been pointed at Trowa...but at him.

After a few moments the four young men had fallen silent waiting, Quatre guessed, for news from the OR. At last Heero spoke. The words weren't a complete surprise to Quatre. He hadn't gone back into hiding without a reason. However he hadn't realized that the situation had become so severe. 'I was careless...and now Trowa's paying for my mistake...'

Quatre rested his face in his hands, never wanting to leave the darkness that they brought. 'What have I done?'

The others took their seats and stared at anywhere but at Quatre, hoping that Trowa would pull through. The door to the operating room stayed resolutely closed, mocking their thoughts of the young man fighting for his life behind those doors. It frustrated them knowing they couldn't do anything except wait.

Heero looked sidelong at Quatre, worried for the young blond's state of mind. He was certainly devastated, that much was clear. It just hurt him to know his friend was upset and be unable to help, even in his own small way.

"Quatre, is there anything...anything I can do? If you want to talk about it..." he left the statement open, hoping Quatre would take the hint. Keeping the trauma inside was one of the worst things a person could do - that was what they were taught at the Preventers HQ. It could cost you or the men with you their lives.

"Don'.....cry...." Trowa whispered through the oxygen mask. "'mmmm.....o....k...."

It took all his energy just to get those words out but he was sure Quatre would understand. He didn't understand why he wasn't dead, but as long as Quatre was all right, that was all that mattered.

Briefly he wondered if the others were there, but then thought they would be sure to be - they'd always been there for each other and most likely always would be. They'd been through so much already together as a group and as individuals.

He had to try a few more words, just to reassure himself that Quatre was fine. "You....o....k....?" he croaked out, closing his eyes from the effort. It was harder than one would believe, but he had to try, for Quatre's sake.

At Trowa's words Quatre's tears instead of stopping only increased in intensity. "Y-you're anything but okay!" he wanted to shriek, however it came out a hushed whisper. "You...I mean...well look at you!" He waved his hand over Trowa's body, not able to bring himself to say that his lover looked worse than if he had been run over. In fact, he had never seen Trowa look worse...not even after a particularly difficult battle in Heavy Arms.

Hanging his head he rested on the side of Trowa's bed. "I...I'm sorry. This is all my fault! They were after me...if you hadn't...why did you?! Trowa...." So many emotions had built up inside of him at once that Quatre was at a complete lose for words. Eventually he was able to choke out, "I'm...fine."

Somehow Trowa doubted it, but wasn't going to call him on it. Now wasn't the time.

"...Was....careless...should...nt have...found you..." he whispered, finding the energy from somewhere. It had to be said, for his lover's sake. "'mmm....sorry...not your....fault.."

As the last of his energy slipped away, he moved his hand to the blond head, gently touching it before he passed out.

~~~~~ooooo~~~~~
Heero stood up and paced the length of the waiting room, the only sign that he was agitated the pacing itself. His expression was calm and serene as usual, though his deep blue eyes were soft with worry. He could only guess since Quatre hadn't been thrown out, that he'd somehow gotten to see Trowa. He hoped it hadn't been too much for him...
Duo cursed under his breath, shifting Quatre in his arms. How could he have let this happen. He knew that it wasn't his fault, that there really was no way to have known that Fowler was in the building before the call, but he couldn't help but feel that he should have realized the danger sooner ( ... )
"Dump him with the other one," Heero advised, giving the assassin a dirty look. He watched coldly as WuFei dropped the man on the floor next to his accomplice, then stood over them both, a thoughtful look on his eyes.
"Do you have anything to tie them up with?" he asked Duo. "I want to take them back to Preventer HQ with me, but we can't leave them unbound. Even bound, Fowler's a bit of a problem, so we'll need something more to keep him out of action. It's a shame Trowa's..." Heero sighed and looked back to the door, still amazed nobody had come to find out what the commotion was about, nor why their patient had been taken from their custody. They would need to have words with the administration at some point; they couldn't get away with this sort of thing happening under their noses.
Duo was resourceful he knew, so he'd leave it up to his friend to sort out what to do with their unconscious opponents.
As if summoned by Heero's thoughts the door burst open and two harassed looking doctor's strode through it. The one closest to them had opened his mouth, most likely to ask them what the hell was going on when the one behind him grabbed his arm, directing his attention to the two unconscious men.
"Just what the hell is going on here?" the one in the rear asked, a little too taken back for niceties. Duo ignored him, instead turning his attentions to the nearest assassin.
"Yeah, I think I have something perfect for 'em." With those words he removed a length of wire for a pocket. He always kept some with him for escaping if the need came. "I think I'll make it nice and tight..."
Both Heero and WuFei turned to look at the doctors, their glances turning cold and forbidding ( ... )
