Joyeux Noël.

Dec 17, 2005 23:38

On Christmas Eve, 1914, soldiers from both German and British/French sides on the Western Front laid down their arms, crossed No Man's Land and spent the night together talking, exchanging gifts and enjoying themselves.

Tonight I saw a movie based on the event, entitled Joyeux Noël. It was ( Read more... )

"Momentarily" is the key. It shouldn't of happened at all. This shouldn't be happening at all.

Sorry man, I don't agree with you on that one. They fought, they put aside their differences for a "special day". BUT THEY RESUMED FIGHTING AGAIN.

It's a fucking joke, that it's now 2005, and society doesn't seem to of developed or anything whatsoever.

I know it was just a temporary thing... not everyone fighting in the war did it, only a tiny percentage of soldiers did it.

They resumed fighting again because they had to, they didn't really have much choice. They were in the middle of a warzone, it's not like they could just pack up their bags and go home - they'd either get shot by the enemy on the way home or be arrested by their own side for treason. It was a fucked up situation on all counts, not one that I'd like to be in.

And I know, I'm not saying that just because of this one event that miraculously everything is gonna be okay now... because in many ways the world is worse off now then it was then. Things are a lot more complicated. I'm just saying that I think it's pretty amazing that these people had enough common sense to just stop for a little while and go "hey, those krauts really aren't all that different to us". If that kind of sentiment could be applied to the modern era then that would be a wonderful thing. That's why I think we can learn a lot from what happened.

I don't think the world was as bad as it was then, and it certainly isn't as bad as it was in WW2. . .I think the problem is we've grown up in fear of repeating the early stages of our history, and political corretness has gone too far.

I agree with you that it'd be great if people could see people for WHO they are and not WHAT they are - but I guess that's one thing that is simply NOT going to change throughout the course of human history.

What I'm trying to say is - instead of having some small truce, it'd be great if it just fucking stopped all together. But to be honest, I think the police are doing a great job right now, and it's a shame how much they get fucking put down by people.

Thanks for that, Josh.

I agree.

I'd prefer to look on the positive side of things.
