typing

I taught myself to type when I was 13, but this resulted in my typing in a bizarre non-standard way which worked well for me but required lots of backspacing ( Read more... )

I did the same thing... I think I type in a nearly standard way though, there's just a few random deviations from the norm. For instance, I only use my left shift/alt/ctrl keys, never the right, I press the spacebar with my right index finger instead of my thumbs, and a few of the keys in the middle (the whole g, h, y, b region) get swapped between the 'proper' and 'wrong' finger depending on what word I'm typing. :P

I also do this weird thing where I know how to type words by motion, not by letter. I can type commonly-used words *really* fast, but if someone throws a really long, unusual word at me, I have to type it more slowly because I have to spell it out in my head and figure out where each key is.

I think the last time I tested my typing I was in the 55-60 range... but that's because I didn't realize I couldn't backspace during the test and I paused because I was confused.

Yeah, I could type commonly-used words really fast with my self-taught method too because it was more about the motion (I typed almost entirely with my left hand flying around the keyboard instead of stationary, only using my right for a couple columns of keys on the right hand side of the keyboard).

I tried the typing test a few more times and proceeded to get my usual 50-something, so maybe the one where I got 80 contained a lot of letter arrangements I'm good with. Or maybe I psyched myself out for the next ones. =P
