The latest information is that 04H and all her avionics woes is that she had a dead battery when someone tried to take her up the other day. This implies that the alternator wasn't charging the battery, which implies a main power bus undervolt (or worse). After sort of not paying attention to how her two-week stint at the avionics shop is going, I got an update from the technician yesterday.

The transponder's receiver was too far off calibration to be retuned, so it had to be replaced with a refurb KT-76A. The encoder turned out to be fine, but the altimeter itself was 40 feet off, too far for IFR ( Read more... )

I dunno, two screen shots don't do it. I was hoping to show how much more awesome my new GPS is compared to my old one (which was also pretty awesome), but static flight displays probably aren't the right way to convey that. Oh well.

We putzed around in Memphis longer than planned, the result being that I was wheels-up later than I would have liked, because I wanted to get home by sunset. Which I managed, thanks to the winds aloft being lighter than forecast. But the sun was still pretty low in the sky by the time I got near home. Becca's pictures she took on our flight to and from Bloomington are here. She took some pretty good ones.

Gotta get mine off the camera tonight. I'm sure a few of them are going to be pretty.

The flight was beautiful. The GPS direct route took us right over the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, which we tried to get some good pictures of. We also flew directly over the common point of Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee, which was interesting but not very photogenic.

Kate's going to Memphis to visit a friend for a few days. Rather than make her drive for 7 hours, I'm going to fly her down there and fly home tomorrow. Weather should be beautiful; I always need good excuses to fly, and I get to have lunch in Memphis.
