Yesterday's Questionable Content pretty much tells you what I think about "personal style," and the writer's commentary, in the sidebar, sums it up quite nicely, thus:

What a great commentary! People who dress "alternative" often are only masking a desire to conform -- just conforming to another group and it's not really free thinking from inside oneself.

You can be conforming and free thinking if the motivation is within. For me, sometimes that's difficult to determine as we are all influenced more than we consciously know by society. To quote the article:

"How much of your own values and beliefs are truly yours, and how much have been thrust upon you by your own cultural associations and choices?"

I've often wondered how much is inner directed and outer directed, and whether we're really able to *truly* determine that. To care what others think is an interesting barometer to know that it's outer directed, though -- imo.
