You can be conforming and free thinking if the motivation is within. For me, sometimes that's difficult to determine as we are all influenced more than we consciously know by society. To quote the article:
"How much of your own values and beliefs are truly yours, and how much have been thrust upon you by your own cultural associations and choices?"
I've often wondered how much is inner directed and outer directed, and whether we're really able to *truly* determine that. To care what others think is an interesting barometer to know that it's outer directed, though -- imo.
