Congratulations! Personally, homeownership felt pretty real to me once we spent an hour signing stacks of paper, followed by several hours literally ripping wood paneling off the walls of our new home -- but I guarantee signing that first mortgage check will have the same effect.

We're starting renos on Monday-- ripping up carpet, installing wood floors, and then painting. No wood paneling, though.

Weirdly enough, instead of installing baseboard molding, the original builders put a strip of carpeting along the bottom every single wall. Ugly-ass beige carpeting. Why? A good chunk of the reno budget is to remove that carpeting and install actual baseboards.

Why? Because the previous homeowner's job was to fuck with you.

Trust me, if baseboard carpeting is the weirdest thing you have to deal with during your renovation, you will be very lucky indeed. You would not believe the kind of stupid things people do to their homes. This Old House has an online gallery of ridiculous home repairs; looks like they're up to their tenth edition, so like I said, no shortage of stupid out there.
