EWW GROSS ICK. Yes, you did warn us. But ack. Not fun at all. I am, however, giggling at the idea of a paper towel ad featuring James as the, uh, tester. :D
We learned the hard way not to leave wrapped edible goodies under the Christmas tree. One of our dogs (when I was a kid) ate a bag of foil-wrapped Hershey's Kisses. In the morning, when my mother's alarm went off, the dog promptly jumped up on the bed and barfed on it. Since there were still bits of red and green foil present, my mom knew immediately what had happened. And - oddly enough, compared to what happened to James - I don't recall anything else bad happening with the dog, just that one big "return". Either that, or they did it outside (dog door) and we missed it?
Hey, I have two cats and it's hairball season. My rugs get slimed plenty. For some reason they seem to prefer to yark on the el cheapo in my bedroom rather than the actual expensive wool pile Persians. Maybe only Persian cats barf on Persian rugs? :D
But house cats just can't match the volume produced by a large dog. And I didn't even try to convey how grossly slimy this stuff was - like a visitation from some sci-fi überslug. And you could smell it through the whole house.
It's fortunate your cats prefer the cheap rug. ☺ I've mostly stopped seeing hairballs here. Theories:

There's a lot to be said for going outside to "find relief".
