24:00Grand Pennsic Ball...may it be known that the Grand Ball held in the town of Pennsic this year shall be a Colour Ball in the tradition of the Court of lord Phillip, Duke of Burgundy, Count of Charolais, etc., and that the colors shall be Gold and Red to create a resplendent ambience in the darkness of the evening. Don garments of one or both colors and come and dance away the evening!Judith, Lady of the Royal Court of Drachenwald, Magistra Laurea
Lady Ragnvaeig just received her PhD in archeology. She has a passion for the material and she's an excellent lecturer. (I caught one of her classes last year.) The Diet course covered what people were eating, but spent more time on how we know what they were eating. Right up the alley of any C.S.I. fan. I wasn't paying attention to the teachers when I picked out my classes, but I was very glad to catch both of hers.
Today's Known-World Choir rehearsal was rough. I started off leading a sectional rehearsal for the tenor line of a couple of pieces. Some pieces have a lot of altos singing tenor, and we ended up working on some alto parts too. When we had everyone together later the basses were essentially lost. The strongest singer in the section wasn't there (people do have other things on their schedules (especially the people who are actually in the S.C.A.)), and the others were not confident. Erlan (the director) sent me off to work with the basses alone for a while. It helped some, but they still weren't ready for prime time. I'd like to have heard how the rehearsal went while I was gone. The tenor section relies on me, but I don't think they'd fall apart without me.
I played in the band for the Grand Pennsic Ball. Again, the best dance band in the "known world"? Pennsic's best ever.
patches023 said the dancers could hear us - perhaps there were fewer standees jabbering. The mandolin player broke 2 strings, trying to play louder. It's the first time he's broken strings other than when he was tuning them.
dglenn was there again with the bass viol. It's much more effective than bass recorders.
maugorn dropped in later too. Scheduling these dances 'til midnight is clearly just a convention. (Although in the dance pavilion they rolled down the tent's side walls at 23:30 because there are campsites across the street.) This dance went really late, with four sets of music.
There was a brief heavy rain right after the dance.
In bed some time after 02:30.
